Gizmondo...

I bought a GP32 cos of Craig's adverts in Retro Gamer!

The power of advertising, eh?

Apart from Madges', as he's the only one in true control of his subconcious mind!!!!

Nevermind... I'm sorry... Clearly, you know how my brain works so much better than I ever could. I mean hey, come on, it's only MY brain, what the fuck do I know about it or my personality? I guess I really do have tons of brand associations, but I just don't realize it, despite the fact that I never go specifically for a certain brand for ANYTHING unless I already know that it's good. I guess I impulsively buy shit cuz of ads too without noticing it. I haven't really been broke for the past 3 months. It just seemed like I was because I've been spending my money on useless shit because the ads made me do it! Indeed...
People who study minds and dedicate their lives to advertising know more about how your brain works than you do. Clearly companies wouldn't spend billions of dollars a year on advertising if it had no effect. Everyone thinks it doesn't affect them, but it subconsciously does. If you have a choice between buying a Mars bar that you've just seen an advert for and a chocolate bar you've never seen before, you will almost certainly buy the Mars bar.

Matt's completly right. When you go into a shop, do you go for the no brand or the brand you've seen before and feel 'safe' with if they are the same price? Is this what makes it 'good'?

And that stuff about us knowing nothing about your personality doesn't really apply. I'd say, that from your posts so far:

-You use the Internet as a way expressing yourself in a way you want to be seen. Nearly all of us do it.

-You have alot of time on your hands, evident from your giant posts.

-You're stubborn. You defend your views very strongly. In extremes, you will however reach a comprimise.

-I'd guess that you either moved school, or were bullied badly especially before high/secondary school.

I'm not a genuis, but these things seem pretty obvouis.

While I DO have a lot of time on my hands, it doesn't take me as long as you might think to type a long post. If I'm really concentrating on what i'm typing... like if it's something I'm pissed off about, or if I'm defending my side of an argument, I can probably type up to about 150 words per minute. So the extra time I have has nothing to do with my long posts. I would still type long posts, probably more of them would be long, actually... because I wouldn't get to check everything and add a new post as often... so there would be fewer posts, but more of them would be long, and they would be longer.

No, I never changed schools in my entire life, and I was only ever really "bullied" once or twice. I was made fun of a lot for being fat, but that stopped for the most part by the time I started middle school. The worst part about elementary school was the damn teachers, not the students. This is no lie. Every teacher I had in elementary school was an asshole/bitch. For no reason at all, they wouldn't like me... before even knowing anything about me... And I'd get yelled at for stupid reasons all the time.

Do you people honestly think that every single person's brain is exactly the same? Not everybody thinks the same way... Everybody is unique, and so are their brains. There are certain things about everybody's brain that are the same, but how advertising affects them is not one of those things. if I see a commercial for a mars bar, I wouldn't have the sudden urge to eat a candy bar. And if I already had the urge to eat a candy bar before seeing the commercial, I wouldn't feel compelled to buy a mars bar either. If I see something I've never seen before while looking for something, I'll be like "hey, what's this?" and check it out. Whether I've heard of it or not, if what it is/does sounds good, I'll buy it... There's no exception to that. I never said that advertising doesn't work at all. I said it doesn't work on me because that's the truth. It doesn't matter how much money some company spent on advertising, or how much time someone spent studying minds... Everybody's brain is different. They learn how the majority of people think... the average person... That's who they target... The largest piece of the pie. Not everybody thinks things thru as much or as well as others, and that's why advertising works on them. Advertising likes to play on fears and insecurities in some cases. If that insecurity doesn't exist for someone, or he/she is smart enough to realize that the advertisement is bullshit and the product not worth buying, the advertising hasn't done its job. I know what advertising is suppsoed to do and how it's supposed to work... And it doesn't work on me.

Something is "good" if it does what it's supposed to do... if it works... if it lasts... that kind of thing... it all depends on what kind of product we're talking about.

Mark, the stuff you listed isn't all related to personality. The fact that I have a lot of time on my hands has nothing to do with my personality. I wasn't saying that you know absolutely nothing about me, but that I sure as hell know myself better than you know me.

I use the internet to express myself in a way I want to be seen? What do you mean by "in a way I want to be seen?" Are you implying that I'm a completely different person online than I am in real life? Because if you are, that's not true.

I've had a Psychology exam, so I'm feeling motivated...but Magus was just rather easy. Still, I'm not claiming to be a genuis, and re-reading my 'theory' I come across as an elitist arsehole.

Actually, having alot of spare time on your hands is related to personality. This could be because you don't want a job or because you don't want to go out drinking etc.

Most people on the Internet shows only their good points, it was just a general comment. Doesn't specifically apply to you.

That sounds about right. Don't take offence, but you seem to enjoy your air guns. That's where I gathered that from. Guns do bring a sense of security of course, but often when a shy, introvert becomes a outgoing extrovert the ownership of a weapon represents the change.

I'm not trying to be a bastard, sorry if you thought I was. I'm not trying to look smarter than I am, and I'm not some elitist fool.

What do you mean by 'work'? I'm sorry, but I completly disagree. Everyone is affected by advertising. If you have cognitive skills you will be affected. Truly good advertising is not that which is obvouis, but the subliminal (obvouisly not completly subliminal, I believe that's illegal. Don't quote me on that though*.) stuff that sinks into our minds and affects the way we think.

If you've ever owned a piece of fashion clothing, a brand name as such, I'd say you'd been effected. You could say that it's other people's influences, like fitting in with a trend, but then, advertising has rubbed off them onto you. Not a direct result, but still a result.

I'll be honest here, I question everything I see. I want to know how things work, why they work and sometimes I think what's the point in them. I often sit playing a game, only to get half way through and think "What's the point?" and stop. (Games? I'm stumbling dangerously on-topic) and I do the same with adverts. But, yes, I know they still affect me, as although we are all different, we all have a brain. The heart is an organ, it beats. Everyone's does. Just because the brain is so complex it doesn't mean it differs so radically from person to person that some are oblivous to subliminal messaging.

Jesus Christ, that's a long text. I have far too much time on my hands.

-*If anyone wants to quote me saying "Don't quote me" feel free too. Comedy will commence if this is the case.

That's the thing though, Mark. I've never owned a piece of fashion clothing, not once ever... I wear what's comfortable, not what's in style or what others think is cool. As far as the gun ownership is concerned, airsoft guns aren't really classified as weapons, and I don't see them that way either. The reason I have airsoft guns has nothing to do with security becuase of the bullshit I went thru in elementary school. I have them because After playing Rogue Spear, they just became interesting. I started asking my gun nut friend questions about some of the guns in the game, as well as other guns, and then when I found out that I could actually own real shooting replicas of my favorite guns to use in the game, I wanted one immediately. It's just a "that's cool" factor, that's all.

One thing you almost never have to worry about when talking to me is offending me... It's very difficult to do, so don't worry. Nothing you've said has offended me. It might seem like I'm reacting in a way that most people would if they were offended, but really I'm not. I'm just responding to the stuff you said to clear a few things up.

When i say that the ads don't work on me, I mean that they don't make me feel inclined to buy anything or look at a specific brand that makes something. The ultimate goal of the ads is to get you to buy something. They don't make me want to buy anything, and they don't make me think "ooh, brand X is so cool. I think I'll go buy something they make."

I didn't know about airsoft guns until I saw a banner on a rogue spear mods site. Long before I saw the banner, I was thinking "how cool would it be if something like that existed?" Then when I saw the banner, I was like "omg, they make those?!" You could say that technically the ad made me decide to buy airsoft guns, which is partially true, but only because I didn't already know about them. The ad made me aware of their existence, but I already wanted something like that long before I knew they were made. The ad got the message out that these things exist, and that's it. That's all the ad did. It didn't make me want to buy them, I already wanted them. And it didn't even mention any brand names.

The fact that I have a lot of time on my hands COULD be related to my personality, but it doesn't have to be.

I read your first line and stop there...
Any item of clothing you where is fashion clothing, it may not be mainstream but it is design and made for a purpose, even a t shirt with print.
There are a few exceptions one being rip off band shirts which are usually naff but sometime comfortable, but even then you can be counted as a subculture because you are showing your pride/loyalty to a band.
Simalar with army where, but this is actually more fashionable because coming summer /autumn army wear will become a mainstream fashion, but they are considered fashionable now anyway, because they are practical, comfortable, in support of the army and war curently happening. These are to designed by someone, the only way its not done by a "fashion designer" is if it is a 2nd real army piece.

Oh and further on in your post, Rogue Spear advertised for you to by that gun...

Rogue Spear doesn't have advertisements. Even if it did, Rogue Spear has nothing to do with airsoft guns.

Most of my clothing is either plain or camouflaged, a lot more plain than camouflage... and I wear camouflage because I like how it looks. And I've been wearing it for a long time. It doesn't have anything to do with advertising.

Firstly Gizmondo will probably fail....but that will be due to Tiger Telematics ludicrous management nothing else.
Secondly the smartadds, in the UK the cheaper version for £129 has been available for a month and a half now and NO adverts have been sent out yet! I think they are waiting for the US launch in August to send them out, but even then i think it will crash and burn...
To anyone who hasnt played one...yes the Fathammer games are a load of shit! but Trailblazer and Sticky Balls are good games, lets hope they get some other good games out before it goes under...
Screen is perfectly big enough, its small so its fits in your pocket...i dont think the GP32 was designed to do that! when designing a 'handheld' some compromising has to be done somewhere, its bright and clear too, only second after PSP screen.
Built quality is great and feels good to hold, unlike the PSP using the analogue stick for more than 30 mins (cramp anyone!?)

So in the end, its a good little machine, if you intend to get one just get teh smartadd version for £129 or $229 as theres no adds out yet and i doubt they will be around for long, some promising games on the way.

But..its a BIG but, as someone said unless its gets cracked or Tiger go tits up and release the SDK then i would advise anyone to hold on till theres a few decent games for it or it has emulators...

Regarding windows CE for it, its not like a PocketPC in that respect, the operating system ISNT running in the background when a game is started, if developers code directly then games will make full use of the power i.e Dreamcast remember the crappy games codded through CE on that?

hmm... maybe that's a bit of a high estimate... but I know for sure that I can get at least 100.

And 50 is really slow
