Hello,

Have you got a brick into your pocket?

Could the pandora / pyra / or next generation model be much thinner?

Any ideas how to make it thinner, regarding hardware are welcome.

Kind regards,
James

Well according to EvilDragon, theyre are some room for improvements, at least for the bottom Part as its a bit too thick..
but you cant change that much from the Inside: You need the 2 Main PCBS when you want to keep the Upgradable Design, and some space for a Heathshield between Batterie and CPU Board, , its allready quite thight packet inside..

Shure its can get thinner, as you can see on the GPD Devices, but they arend Upgradable, and you cant change the Batterie easely..

First thing is buy the "Bricks" we can make now, that will pay for any future projects.

Yeah and there are plenty of ways of saving space if we compromise on a few things, like the modular upgradeable CPU design and use a single board design, maybe battery size, types of ports....

But then we start losing features that make the Prior devices appealing.

It's difficult to make a clamshell device thin. You could probably squeeze a few mm here and there, but at the expense of something else (battery life and ports/connectors mostly). On more recent devices like the Pyra, you'd also get heat dissipation issues if everything is too tight (that's what happens on the GPD Win: the battery is too close to the CPU and absorbs a lot of heat, causing it to expand).

If you want a thinner device, you'll probably have to look at something more like a tablet.

Amazing how fast this thread gets messages.

Anyway, if i recall correctly the new case design already is thinner.

The design would probably be thinner if it was easy to do. But the bulky handheld is easy to hold, assemble and it can take a (little) hit.
The Pandora fit okay in my pocket, but I guess not everyone is used to carrying a large bulky object in their pants

Im fine whit the bulkyness of the Pyra, allthought i made the Mistake to carry the Pyra last year on my big Sunday E-Bike Tours, until i hit a Troitwar ( i dont know what is the right term in English), and fell on the Pyra,
dont worry, the Pyra is fine, i only had to reconnect one Peg in the Display Frame,
But now i have some mobility issue: i cant move my right leg up that high anymore, so E-Bike Driving was this summer canceled, and i hope i can recover this ..

To be honest, once I got used to the more bulky Pyra, the slimmer Pandora does not feel as comfortable to hold any more.

If the Pyra would get thinner then that would mean there is more room for extra features. IR port, outside camera, RJ-45 Ethernet port; these are all things that the Pyra needs. Actually, the Pyra actually has room for it right now except that the case is too small. We should have gone with this case.

The solution is called "GPD Win Max 2".
It is thinner than a Pyra and has many more ports and features.

The Pyra is quite compact, in comparassion to the "Monster PSP" Steamdeck, and it got much more Connectors,
Steamdeck is only USBC, one Micro SD, and 3,5 Zoll Audio Out, Pyra is 2 times USB2, Micro HDMI, Micro USB, and USB Micro3 or how this W Chaped Port is called.. and 3,5 Zoll Audio Out.. and 2 times SDXC..
Maybe i should post some Sice Pictures..

The GPD Win Max 2 solves none of the issues I mentioned and it running on Windows is a complete deal-breaker.

If I would buy another gaming handheld work PC right now then it would probably be a Pandora. It has all the mentioned issues but it solves the unmentioned issue of not having a working suspend mode.

Thin would suck. Handheld ergonomics are important. That’s why I prefer the original GBA, ergonomics trumps games. Pyra is intentionally phat.

The DS also has a downgrade like that in ergonomics. The DS Phat is made for ergonomics and feels great to use while the DS Lite is made to look good when it is closed and it feels not so good to use.

You know that I was joking here a bid ;)

BTW, I am running Linux on mine since 3 months now and use it as my daily driver ;)
Sure, it has no suspend on Linux, but that does not matter for me.

But you are right, the Pandora is still one of the best gaming handhelds out there.
There are still Anbernic devices which are not better for emulation than the Pandora is.

Only the ergonomics and the keyboard of the Pyra are better.

Once the case is finished, that should be the final case for this company as long as possible. If we never designed a new case again, it would be great, and I think that was the point, what with how the CPU board is designed to be upgradeable. The form is for function, with aesthetics working around it.
