Not sure if this needs its own thread yet or not. If so, @Nintendo can make it.

Anyway, Valve is working on a piece of hardware with airplane mode and haptics, so likely a handheld. Code refers to it as “SteamPal”.

Code:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GamingLeaksAndRumours/comments/nkk6xp/valve_is_working_on_a_handheld_game_console_named/

I'm not sure a handheld from Valve deserves its own thread, given the abject failure of all of their previous hardware projects outside of graphics cards and PC accelerators. But then again, it probably doesn't belong in this thread objectively about the GPD WIN 3. Perhaps we should have a thread called 'Valve hardware failures' or something.

I just had to look up what that was, but that perhaps says more about me than about the success of the product. I more or less stopped being interested in anything VR after Facebook bought Oculus, only watching a video series of Half Life Alyx since then.

I’ve gotta say, seeing the reactions to SteamPal, the amount of people who haven’t heard of UMPCs is insane. Kinda reminds me of how everyone was excited that Nintendo had invented a handheld that could be played on TV, when PSP and Pandora already did that.

Although apparently it’s not going to have a QWERTY keyboard, just game controls and a touchscreen?

Presumably at very least the touchscreen is going to be a general purpose input device, and maybe you can also configure one of the analogue sticks to do that same. Windows is quite usable with only a pointing device and a couple of buttons, hell on any linux supporting X you can start processes including a web browser without touching the keyboard (once you've logged in of course, which still generally requires the keyboard but can be configured to auto-login, provided you're comfortable with the risks that entails). That may also be easy in wayland as well, although personally on my hardware I've only been able to get a terminal up in wayland so far.

What serious Linux user is gonna be happy without a keyboard though ;):p Would much rather have a :p&|a: !

After GPD shipped units with a virus preinstalled and others with the wrong WIFI chip, I'm not too sad any more about being an indemand backer and no first batch customer.
Seems like they still have quality issues.
Let's hope the battery will last (live) longer than the last GPD batteries.
I don't want such an expensive device bricked after 1,5 years.

Yay, finally got my WIN 3.
Quality looks much better than expected.
It's super quiet when playing Dolphin.
Screen size is good. Not too small.

Button placement is awful. I did not expect it to feel that bad.
On the Wii U I liked the right stick position a lot.
On the WIN 3 it's very uncomfortable.
Having the stick and buttons swapped would not have been an issue for the keyboard.
The rest of the device seems to be quite good.

I won't do much testing as I have ordered a 2TB SSD I want to install first.

Nice comparassion picture, at least for the Size as you have only a Prototyphe Pyra and mine looks much better ^^
The WIN 1 was quite Pockatable, whit its clamshell display protaction, but this WIN 3 would need a Propper Carry Case

@Askarus

Congrats, mate~
Finally, we can be GPD WIN 3 brothers <3
Ah, you already have your WIN 3.

It's totally worth the money.
My Gaming Laptop has a Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz CPU and the WIN 3 is about 70-80% faster.
Combined with a much faster SSD that will be my new standard desktop setup.
And it's completely silent. My Gaming Laptop constantly emits fan noise.

The sticks look pretty fragile compared to the Switch sticks.
The sliding mechanism feels much more solid than what I have expected.
Batter life is very good. more than 3,5 hours Gamecube emulation (battery was not fully charged, so I don't know the exact time).

Tomorrow I'll swap the SSD and then we'll see how well Linux runs.
I'll go for Manjaro and only use the official Ubuntu if Manjaro has issues I can not fix.

I still prefer my Pyra for anything non-gaming related.
The Keyboard on the GPD is fantastic to have to type something quickly in game.
GPD keyboard is trash for anything else.
Not necessarily the touch-haptic but the layout is what makes it so bad.

GPD mouse control is also trash compared to Pyra stick mouse movement.

What I also don't like is how the GPD does not have HDMI out without the dock.
Constantly needing an adapter to power the device while HDMI output to an external screen is bad.
Luckily it still has a headphone jack.
And a micro SD slot.
AYA NEO does not even have a micro SD. That is a no-go for me.

Pyra but with the power to emulate Gamecube/Wii at full speed, that would be the perfect hybrid.

The docking mechanism on the other hand feels good,
At least it won't scratch the screen like the Switch dock does.

Do you mean the GPD is trash for anything else? Surely not the Pyra?!

Yeah, the GPD's keyboard.
I expressed that not very well.
Pyra -> Great for anything it can do
GPD -> Better than Pyra if Pyra is too weak for it.

GPD has no advantage for me except speed.
(Nah, and sound, good Internet, USB and HDMI. Never got those to work on my Prototype. Still I'd choose the Pyra If I had to)
(I need to meet ED in person at some time and try to get some new Pyra parts out of him :p )
