Release DraStic Nintendo DS emulator

I wish! :| Frankly I doubt the Pandora could handle emulating the 3DS. I mean it has issues with emulating the NDS - which may or may not be fixed if Exophase was minded to throw us an updated DraStic. I'm hearing good things about MelonDS - wondering how this would go on Pandora as a core in Retroarch?

Probably not well. Having moved from my CC Pandora to a Raspi+LibRetro emulators, I was incredibly disappointed at how badly they all perform. Many games that were full speed on the Pandora are stuttering like crazy on the Pi3B+.

I think Exophase did an incredible job creating DraStic for the Pandora (hint: see my user name! ;)) It would appear he abandoned the Pandora version years ago to focus on his Android build. Thus my interest in exploring other emulation alternatives for the Pandora.

But this is all theoretical until we have something to test. We have RetroArch on the repo but it's several versions behind and last time I tried it, it didn't have MelonDS core included.

Hmmm. Any of our serial porters want to volunteer to port the latest RA? :D

I have been checking melonDS for my gpdwin (since drastic is not available on x86 linux).

MelonDS is not as compatible as drastic and performance is way way worse than drastic. Being a project aimed at x86 don't expect much focus on performance.

Even if possible to port (I'm not the one to answer this) it will be useless on pandora.

I think Exophase did an incredible job creating DraStic so I don't expect melonDS to be the same quality just yet. However having an alternative for NDS on Pandora would be fantastic.
Especially considering that most of the systems emulated on the Pandora have more than one emulator option available. This variety of choice proves extremely useful when you come across a game breaking bug on one emulator so you jump across to another emulator and it turns out that the other emulator will allow you to play past that section! (I had to do this with one of the Castlevania games on GameBoy Advance.)

I don't know anything about porting but looking at the GitHub releases page, it appears to me that melonDS is 64 bit based not x86? The latest releases are Linux64 and Windows64.

I thought I read somewhere (possibly a RetroArch article) that melonDS had significantly improved in a recent update. If you don't mind me asking, what build of melonDS were you testing on your GPDwin?

I installed the core using retroarch, it doesn't say which version is but it's automatically updated.

Just warning you that in a device much more powerful than Pandora not even desmume (much more mature than melonDS) is playable. I don't expect any devs to be encouraged on porting desmume or melonDS to Pandora, or even if it's worth on Pyra.

Well I don't know. It's too early to make a call as to the performance on the Pandora. If I have this clear, you were testing on a different machine (GPD Win v Pandora), different fork (RAs melonDS v melonDS), different OS (Windows v Zaxxon) and different architecture (x86 v ARM).

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that melonDS will run well on Pandora (DraStic only works as good as it does because it was optimised for ARM). I am not convinced that it would be worthless to have a port of melonDS on Pandora (or Pyra).

Slightly off topic - Desmume is a rubbish emulator. It is inaccurate because of hang ups by its devs.

That's a good point. We basically as board posters here paid for drastic by being play-testers of it, helping Exo to improve the core code experience (apart from Pokemon games, since we apparently don't play them in these parts). That is less likely to be needed with a Pyra version, as a handful of beta testers at most can check the integration into ARM linux, and the core emu code is pretty much perfect already, so I wouldn't mind paying for it either. It's only I guess if Exo wanted to give us a present, he could spin it like that.

Well that depends. They could still choose to make people pay for the android skin.
Retroarch is available for Android.

Well, I already own it for Android anyways. I don't even use that version, but the money was still well spent.
