What are you going to do when you first get your Pyra


I'm tempted to retire my eeePC which mainly gets used for the consumption of a/v media, web browsing and connecting to my build server over ssh so I can preprocess any videos there and also work on my little projects from the sofa. Depends on how usable the keyboard is really; I did use my Pandora for consuming audio works, but the keyboard and lack of RAM generally limited my other uses of a living room computer.
 
What I will do with :p&|a: ?
- I will add some storage, may be 512 GB micro sdxc card, partition it to have one large /home partition and 2 other about 30 GB partition for other OSs ( archlinux arm and probably android )
- Get my data from laptop and phone,
- Add my SIM card, and test it for calling, sync my contacts from phone ( not sure how yet), will pair with my Bluetooth earphones.
- connect with my ssh server and set backup with rsync over ssh, setup sshfs to mount my server partition (with movies and music)
- get some games and emulators
- throw away my laptop and phones :D
- If android emulator is working I may add some apps, like whatsapp ( I hate that but still have to use )

I am planning to keep my pyra for many years, and if updated components keeps coming, I will keep it forever ( though I have serious doubt about that as change in the technology may preclude that)

EDIT: I will get i3 running with some custom shortcuts, rofi/dmenu to provide startmenu and some my custom shell scripts. There will be so much to configure.

What is that ? native app or whatsapp web or it is in android emulation ?
 
First thing I do after drooling all over it, is make backups. Having a backup of the "factory default setup" is always handy.
After that, it's time to test the hardware, cause any fails are best found early.
Then it's time to try out some games, comprehensive benchmarking, get a feel for bottlenecks and capabilities.

And then it's development time.
 
I'm not sure how relevant making backups is. There should be images posted the way they were with the Pandora that let you restore the unit to any released factory state you choose (though I'd check your sanity if you install an old version for no good reason).
 
If I remember correctly, Whatsapp "native" apps is electron based (like VSCode or Slack), so can run on Arm with a little hacking.
That's great, and little surprising too. Hacking a closed source app xD
 
I am aware of electron, which is open source, but whatsapp is closed source. So what is hacked, electron or whatsapp ?
Can this run on other Linux platforms also, ( I mean x86 ), Whatsapp runs on x86 android versions, which I have installed as dual boot on my Dell latitude.
 
Telegram was native.
WhatsApp was the Electron App.
The Phone needs to be connected to the internet when using WhatsApp.

Vivaldi, Chromium and the Mate desktop support touchscreen scrolling by default.
Firefox needs one option to be set.
 
Discord also uses Electron, can it be hacked in this way?
iirc Discord has some native libraries for the overlay and stuff. Using the web version is probably easier. Perhaps wrap up it to be its own app and you got nearly the same experience.

Unfortunately the web version cuts off the beginning of everything I say. The voice activation doesn't start the transmission quickly enough I think. That was a while back I tried though, maybe it'll work now.

That's what I wanted to know. It's WhatsApp web, that depends on android phone running and connected to net.

I have a few things I'd like to try out. But I think the first thing apon opening up the packaging will be to make sure the pyra isn't damaged in any way. Parcel/delivery compnies have a tendancy to throw around parcels - and I hope nobody gets their pyra delivery put underneath a bunch of large heavy boxes = broken pyra x.x ! Plus my local postman has a tendancy to try to shove packages through the letterbox that sometimes really don't fit quite right.....

But what to do first on the pyra? Well one thing I'd like to do first is just to see how well a heavier desktop such as KDE Plasma will run. I'll be intrested to see what happens -- if the pyra is on a par with the speed of the latest raspberry pi however kde plasma won't work well - it is slooooow on a pi! For the raspberry I use the TDE desktop (works a *lot* faster!). If the pyra is slow with KDE I'll use the TDE desktop on it also. Quick question -- anyone know if the pyra will have an "empty" version of the OS in the same way the pi has raspbian stretch lite (so you add all the X/Gui stuff yourself via packages)?

Another thing I would like to try is rtl-sdr on the pyra. Even a phone can do this these days and it'll be intresting to see how well the pyra copes.
