How do you pronounce GIF?

the problem with English
the problem is English. English is the PHP of human languages.

Not my words:
Thanks to English’s constant desire to steal words from other languages and assimilate them into itself, there are quite a few common words that come from Irish.

For example, “whisky” (or “whiskey”) comes from the Irish uisge beatha, meaning “the water of life”. “Galore”, meaning an abundance of, comes from gu leor, meaning “enough”. The word “slogan” also comes from Irish: sluaghghairm, a combination of sluagh (“army”) and ghairm (“shout”).

note that due to English having so many foreign words, each set is written in a different way, and have their own pronunciation. And then came the inopportune Great Vowel Shift.

Well, when the first word in is 'graphical' you'd think the G would take on the same sound. I really think the creator wanted to stir things up to be funny. He's probably a Troll. Like I said, Linus Trovalds said in a documentary it was Linux with a soft 'i' and not a hard 'i' like his name because that was how everyone was saying it and unless they knew who he was they wouldn't know any better. That was an example of a creator being the bigger person.

I remember when I first started using Linux, like at age 15, and a few people at lan parties would correct me, like over and over again, to the point where I really didn't want to be associated with the community. Luckily there were those there that were chill and said it didn't matter how I pronounced it and a few years later dumped windows completely. After that experience I just told myself unless I'm trying to help someone learn English I'll never correct them.

So for me it doesn't really matter how it is said, I know what people mean if they say GIF or JIF.

Oh yeah, and I wanted to say this in my first post but it slipped my mind but I know of some web developers that got fired because the people they were making the website for kept correcting their pronunciation and they just got fed up and told them they didn't want to deal with them anymore. So, don't correct the hand who is feeding you.

Yeah, when I first started reading about it, I called Linux like 'Line-ux' (as opposed to the more common and apparently more correct 'linn-ux'). People did correct my pronunciation, and I guess relatively quickly I switched how I pronounced it. These days I even have to double check my thinking to think of the way I used to pronounce it, since I think of it as 'linn-ux' in my head when I read the word these days.

The team got fired, or they gave up on the contract? Unless the web devs got fired because they kept mispronouncing things, but that would be the converse of your motto I guess.

I guess they weren't fired because it was a contract to make a website. They lost the contract because people constantly correcting you for saying something the logical way is annoying as hell. So not fired but lost a contract. Hopefully they learned their lesson and let things like that slide. It was a company someone I knew worked for and was notable because they guy really freaked out and had an outburst yelling at them all the way to the elevator. I don't think it was just GIF though, the guy probably wasn't technical at all and the web developers might have just been trying to explain something to him along with correcting him on GIF through the meeting.

Oh, hang on. It was the web developers who were contracted to make the website by the customer who were correcting the customer's bad pronunciation? That's not what I read and contend it's not what you wrote, but in which case means 'fired' or 'let go' or whatever is perfectly understandable, and doesn't cause the grinding of gears in my head that it did the first time round.

but just a different pronunciation
That will work! Can you recognize the flavours of "ma Linux"?

ma

mā Linux : Mother Linux - Be the first that gets patches, but you need to configure things yourself. Has a caring community.
má Linux: Cannabis Linux - Green themed. Everything just works, man.
mǎ Linux: Stallion Linux - We compile it on the fly, runs super fast.
mà Linux: Scold Linux - Get off my lawn, no systemd. Stable software.
