What are you playing this weekend/these days?

International Karate Ultimate Competition version, on the c64.

Since Proton became a thing on Linux Steam I've been playing the original Borderlands, which is fairly refreshing after having a long stint of Borderlands 2 and I forgot a bit of the original game. Kind of wish it had a native client like Borderlands 2 and the Pre-Sequel, I rather support native games...

Yeah, this is why I'm kind of opposed to Proton. With Wine it was just a stop-gap, Linux users used it because it was all that was available. Proton is written by and promoted by a major industry leader: how many companies are now going to go "we don't need a linux port, we'll just let Proton handle that for us"?
On the other hand, if the play is identical whether Proton or native does it actually make a difference other than a sense of virtue?

On one hand I think it's stunting development of native ports, on the other Valve is keeping a metric of who is using Linux/Proton so it still may be beneficial in a way to show there is still a healthy Linux user base.

Is there a way to see what games are proton supported? I'm just running windows because i know the games are available, but would be interested to know which of my games are supported

Well some third party site has started a database, ( https://www.protondb.com/ ). Honestly I just enable it for everything and try it, so far I've not seen too much that didn't run well. I believe the official list is smaller than what actually does run well as everything needs play testing to be officially supported.

this weekend i'll play c64's Ghosts'n Goblins Arcade. fun times ahead!

i will probably need a lot of trainers still. ;)

what's new:
This time we went all-out and improved the game as much as we could. Most of the code is either rewritten, bug fixed or improved in one way. Graphically and sound-wise the game is completely new, everything was redone and improved. Overall the game is around 4 times the size of the C64 original and is pretty close to the size of the Arcade.

List of major improvements:

- Two completely new levels added.Level 6 has an additional final room.
- Existing 4 levels are expanded to be twice the size of the original.
- All levels have completely new graphics and level designs applied.
- All levels have unique new tunes added which were newly composed.
- New Sound Effects added or changed.
- New sprite multiplexer coded, which will minimize glitches.
- Intro sequence added where Satan abducts the Princess.
- Game Map added, which shows your progress when you are killed or you reach incoming level.
- Game Complete animation added.
- Game Over sequence added.
- Two new Bosses added for levels 5 and 6. They are bigger than any existing enemies in the original game.
- Added a new Jumping Skeleton enemy in levels 5 and 6.
- Moving Clouds recoded so they can be used on level 5.
- Arthur now can turn around when he jumps and he can shoot backwards.
- Added an improved Title/Loading screen with new tune.
- Weapons are now improved and all of them now actually make sense.
- Enemies have improved AI - not perfect but much better than original.
- Levels 1-4 are done in 2 parts now, but transition between them is fully seamless.
- Flying Knights at level 2 can only be shot from behind as in Arcade.
- Zombies first dig out some dirt so you can spot them before they kill you.
- Collision detection is drastically improved - you won't get killed when a bullet flies over your head anymore.
- Dragon Boss covers more of the screen area now and you need to shoot his head three times, and he won't shoot so many bullets anymore.
- House Ogres are easier to kill now.
- 'Sparkles' are now visible when you hit an enemy.
- Weapons that are dropped depend on the level you are playing, so you cannot get the shield in the beginning.
- Pause Game and Quit Game added, which can be activated by Run/Stop key.
- Arthur can jump over obstacles now even if he touches them. In the original he only jumped up.
- Time limit is now different for each level.
- 7 Trainers added for your pleasure.

huge kudos to Nostalgia !

Last game I bought was World of Final Fantasy Maxima for Switch. For a monster battler spinoff game, I like how the story feels like a full modern Final Fantasy story. Amnesiac mains, epic scope, witty dialogue, no sense making... Feels right at home in the series.

Wanna get a computer soon so I can get back to playing old games though.

I'm sorely tempted to get Sekiro, but just know I'd be unable to play it. Loved Demon Souls when it first came out, and the Japanese setting and ninja style of Shadows Die Twice is more appealing to me. I'm just terrible at Souls style.

Actually I did play Dark Souls II a bit yesterday, but the combat just felt bad, and just got killed by the little pygmy boars at the start and kept falling off things.

Sekiro seems to be a fair bit different:

Aw, I've been enjoying DS2 so much. The boars are a trolling attempt. Just ignore them. When you find a weapon that has a nice downwards swing, like a club or a halberd, they are easy prey. Not like there's much reason to kill them apart from farming some multiplayer item.
Falling off things, well yeah, that happens. I came back to the tutorial area after over 60 hours to trade in some stuff and fell right off a ledge - I wasn't careful enough.

Give the game a fair chance. I cursed a lot throughout, but ultimately enjoyed it. I'm a sucker for discovering worlds and this game is among the best, especially with the DLCs.

Everything looks so tiny, I think this would be a game I'd play in a window and play a movie in another window or something. I'll do that with every game, next monitor I buy will be a 4k TV, I'm done with dual monitors.
The great thing about this mod is, that you can't only choose any resolution you want, you can also zoom in or out at any moment with the mouse wheel.

Oh, that's cool, I thought you were just stuck at one resolution like the original, I didn't realize there was a mod.
