Brief Answers to the Big (Pyra) Questions

Regqrding telephony, it might be interesting to have a look at what purism does for the librem5 I guess...

What about the thingy, @Grench was talking about? I think there was "planet" in the name or gemini. I'm bad with names. Ain't that a phone with linux as an alternative OS?

The gemini or cosmo comminicator (or whatever it's really called) from planet computers is stuck in the same linux telephony hole as we are. You can only make calls on that device from Android until someone writes a telephony client that works for them.

@levi, that I did not expect. What about Android - the important parts there open source? Or what Nokia had going on - Mimi, Mama, Memo, can't remember the name. ? Sailfish? Or Linux? Ain't there Laptops with SIM slots? Telephony can't be that magical!

You could port something android, sailfish or even maemoish to GTK/QT but generally the screen estate differences affect the UI more than the graphics library you're using. I guess there might be politics as well in taking a phone telephony app and porting it to linux, but that wouldn't explain why nobody on github's done it.

A few clarifications...

Planet Computers is a company that has made one device and has a sequel device in the works and pre-orderable on Indiegogo.

Planet Computers released the Gemini PDA last year. It is an Android clam shell phone with a touch type keyboard. It works pretty well. There is a thread on these boards regarding it's product release. More in-depth forums for this device are here:

I own and actively use a Gemini PDA. Very nice device. Although it is possible to, "install Linux" on it, the Linux software capabilities are not great. Sailfish looks like it could eventually be a great OS option for these, but for whatever reason isn't sold for the US market.

Planet Computers has opened pre-ordering of the Cosmo Communicator. It takes what they did for the Gemini and expands on it - greatly. Additions include a backlit keyboard, a 2nd screen on the back of the clamshell lid, call acceptance/denial with integrated fingerprint reader and a 20MP camera on the lid as well.

((Can we PLEASE turn off the freakin' automagic media linking formatting for URLs on these boards???))
I have a Cosmo on pre-order as well. I like the Gemini a lot, and the Cosmo appears to be 'more-better' of the same.

Back to talking about the Pyra.

@Grench Nice product placement :D

@levi I'm more interested in the backend - interfacing with the lte/telephony chip, handling outgoing and incomming calls/sms and live connections, using the audio devices - the fun stuff.

Here are the source code for dialer, address-book and messaging app on ubuntu touch,

dialer-app
messaging
address-book

As ubuntu is debian based, I hope that these app can be ported. However ubuntu uses some android components as per ubuntu-wiki. So I am not very sure about that.

I think same can be said about plasma os, which probably uses halium , again with android components.

Those three apps source seems to be GPL3 and CC-BY-SA dual licensed. Most android code as I understand it is Apache licensed (ignoring the kernel), so I guess they aren't android tainted and came from elsewhere.

These are part of ubuntu-touch core apps, designed by ubuntu devs. They can be installed on ubuntu desktop also. I would have tried installing them but I am not having ubuntu/debian on any of my devices.

That shouldn't stop you trying though. Unpack them using 7z or something equivalent and you'll be presented with a data.tar file, which you can unpack using bsdtar.

You'll then need to try it and see on what libs it falls over. If it's one you simply haven't got in /usr/lib then install it, but if it's an older version then you can try finding the old release of it and trying to install that alongside, but if it tries to wrist symlinks which conflict with your previously install version, I can see that being tricky.

I'm not sure yet of a scriptable way to remove it if it turns out not to be happy and you want rid of it. You'll have to list the tar using 'bsdtar -tf' and then manually remove anything it installed.

This is going to be very tricky as I run archlinux x86-64. Still I will see what I can do.

Will the Logitech M590 Silent Bluetooth Mouse work whit the Pyra (and the Pandora) ??
I plan to make a Booth at a Beeceeper Confention and i want to use my little Linux PC to write orders, and for some paperwork.., whit Libre Office..
I know the newer Logitech Devices need a Dedicatet App to configure, but maybe i can configure it on GPD Win, and use it then on Pandora /and Pyra..

I've not come across a logitech or other brand mouse that doesn't basically work, even if the fancy configurator app is windows only. They usually seem to have sensible defaults.

But if you're going to an expo I'd suggest you find a USB mouse that you can test, and at least take that and the Logitech if you've no chance to test that in advance.

It’s more like a Beekeeper Expo, so they don’t have Mouse to sell..
Also i need a New Mouse anyway, as my old Logitech Anywhere Mouse seems to have some issues after the 8 Years I have it..
The Logitech Mouse works whit a Dongle (my Win 7 Notebook or whit Bluetooth (Gpd Win, Pandora, Pyra) so it’s quite suitable for my Hardware..

I think I have to test it on Thursday, whit every PC I have..

Other Question:
Is there a good solution for a Charging Cable for the Pandora??
I know it’s works whit the PSP Charger but I will need my Powerbank on this Expo as I wants to be independent from a Wallplug..
I have a Anker 26000 mah Powerbank for this Purpose,

but I also have a tiny old 6000 mah Powerbank that’s have a Charging Cable that looks like the Pandora Power Plug,
I also charged this Bank successful whit a PSP Charger...

So can I charge my Pandora whit this Cable on USB??
Or should I more likely use the second Charging Port??
Is it Micro USB and which Port is it??

The Expo is on April 14. mybe at this time I allready have my Pyra, but I think I would prefer to use my Pandora then because maybe the Pyra OS is too early for serious work

USB->PSP charge cables have historically been pretty available on the big bookseller in the sky. I've used one myself to charge my pandora from a powerbank in the past.

I wasn't suggesting you buy a mouse from the expo, by the way. I was suggesting you buy a cheap wired USB mouse, probably from a local market type shop thing. But if the logitech comes with a dongle, it might work okay given the proviso it might well be USB1 so need a hub (but the same applies to cheap mice by the way).

The Logitech is Dongle and Bluetooth,
I tested previously a Bluetooth Mouse on my Pandora, but it wasn’t the Best Mouse and ditnt worked when I wanted it to work..
so I think the Logitech should work much better..

And i had lots of Stuff from this Brand previously on my Pandora, like a USB Keyboard, a Gaming Mouse and a Wireless Mouse..
My USB Headset is also from Logitech, but I didn’t try it whit my Pandora..
