Quick update and summary


It is not a matter of "big company". The only thing that determines significantly is the number of customers. The more customers, the more units produced, the more components bought, which makes component cost go down. And the "one-time" cost (like production setup, shipment of components etc.) is distributed over more units.
That's what I meant though, higher manufacturing volume so all the parts are cheaper.
 
Maybe you did, but in common parlance big company tends to refer to a company with many employees and multiple performing product categories. Even a small company can sell a lot of product, in which case the product price can end up going down, although in which case, companies with ever increasing bottom lines tend to take on more employees so tend to become big companies while they're still competitive.
 
The only thing these all give me over doing that is really just a physical ethernet socket, which isn't that valuable to me.

But in any case, I hope this is a success so that I can put in an order for one closer to my actually needing it.

Really? Here I was just wishing that it had two gigabit Ethernet ports - so it could be set up as a firewall/bridge.

Make the lower out of a single plastic mould.
Mount the board CPU side up in the case.
Make the lid out of a single piece aluminum heat sink - with that much surface area it should keep it cool.

Set top Pyra... Then we would just need bluetooth handheld controllers that mimic the Pyra's and we could call it a Pytroller.
 
Actually there's three wireless ones. Bluetooth, WiFi, and 4G/3G.

You still have two network interfaces if that's your bag, just one's wired and the other is wireless.
What's the wired one?
 
I hope that the board will have some holes so that one can attach a case or at least screw in some "legs" into the PCB.

BTW: we need still a little more preorders as indicators that you are interested. Unfortunately we can't pre-finance them and there is no big market outside this community so that we can't convince others to take financial marketing risk. So there is a build-on-demand model. But ... if we get enough preorders the price is likely going down.

I think that we need more attention for the Pyra devboard.
I can imagine, that even many community members could overlook the announcement in this thread, since many only read Evil Dragons news posts. There is also no mention of the devboard in any description of the Pyra on the homepage and in the Dragonbox shop

Since it's not out yet, and there are no CPU boards either, this isn't what the guys like myself had to buy, to get a head start with software development. Most of us have the Ti Official OMAP5 devboard and paid over $325 USD for it, there was another company IPEG that has another board, but the Ti one is the most supported.

Yes. The focus of this EVAL board is less to give software developers of Pyra a headstart - because as soon as processor boards are widely available, the Pyra is as well and can be directly used as development target. Rather it is thought for those who want to have the same processor in a form factor for other purposes. Or if someone starts to develop a new processor board, heshe can use this EVAL board for experimenting, instead of a nice Pyra. Developing hardware inside the Pyra would mean to removea battery, open screws before getting access. And reassembly before testing anything. It is also difficult to oscilloscope signals inside the Pyra. So the focus of this EVAL board is to give easier access to the signals internal to the Pyra.
This are just some thoughts about potential applications. I am sure people have more and better ideas than I have ...

Ideas - I don't know that they are any better or worse than what you will have already come up with.

Idea 1. Decrease product variety to increase scale of remaining product(s).
Idea 2. Not many people are going to pre-pre-order a stand alone board without a CPU card. You may as well price them WITH a CPU card.
Idea 3. Some of us would look to this to be a 'desktop super Pyra'. Would a copper heatsink & fan solution allow for significant overclocking on these?
Idea 4. This screams a need for (mostly) depopulated Pyra mainboards to be used as bluetooth gaming controllers to turn this into a multiplayer console. (yes, I know the history)
 
Idea 5. (developing @Grench's router remark) The board should have three or more ethernet or SFP ports, which are wired directly to the SoCs ethernet interfaces, of which it hopefully has at least three.
I'm actually looking for a router. Turris Omnia peeks my interest, but the switch chip between the SoC and the mechanical ports annoys me - if only it could do link aggregation. And then I'm not eager to pay for the WiFi-mPCIe-cards, it comes preinstalled with - makes it a bit more expensive than what I was going to invest.
Then my gaze fell upon SolidRun's ClearFog Base with enclosure - $145 at their shop, but additional $40 for the only shipping option UPS. That brings it over the threshold for customs fee (€150), which applies before 19% import tax, which makes it much more expansive than $145. I'm kinda at an impass. Anyone commuting Israel-Berlin a lot? :)

That's a good point. I'd preorder one of the boards but without a CPU-board it is quite useless for me.
