Dragonbox Pyra Discord : REBORN

Hey, I've been thinking, maybe we should give the Pyra Discord channel another shot. And not just because I've been booted from the Pyra IRC channel.

...Okay, it's only because I've been booted from the Pyra IRC channel. :(

But IRC.

It will be great when I get my Pyra and can idle in a bunch of channels all the time.

In other news, I misplaced my Pandora charger, which I also use with my ebook reader.:(

Set up mumble. Discord is non-free.
If ED migrates his owncload over to Nextcloud we could use the voice/video chat app there.
I don't know why everyone here hates non-free, so much.
But I also dunno if it's worth downloading another program just to contact Pyra members with, since everyone else uses discord (unless you're a normie and still use skype).

I'm using Nextcloud for years now instead of Owncloud...?

Hm, I can also setup a free Pyra community Diaspora* server in case something is interested :)

I would so much prefer something persistent.
I'm at European time and don't have an always on machine.
I would be so much more active if I could read some logs and not loose everything that's posted when I'm not online.
I find IRC horrible.

Let's make a Telegram group for everything ;)

As much as I like Telegram and use it regularly, I wouldn't give my phone number to strangers.

Anyways, I don't think IRC is the way to go these days.
There have to be better and more practicable solutions.

... do these all have command line-clients as well?
That's pretty handy if you have a very slow internet connection and you connect yourself to a terminal server :)

Who does that nowadays?

I think more user benefit from a proper modern Chat with logs and more functionality than from a command line interface for slow connection.

why not add a logger bot ? so one can just query it ?

Or so. That would be handy especially for the dev channel I think

Please note, that to join an IRC channel, it is not necessary to use an IRC client.
I participate in IRC channels from my XMPP client (Gajim) using a gateway software installed on the XMPP server, called biboumi.
AFAIK, one can also join IRC via similar gateways in the Matrix network.

I agree with others here, that non-free, closed, walled gardens are not the way to go.
Less so, if they ask for phone numbers.
Personally, I would not use Telegram, Whatsapp, Slack, Signal or similar stuff.

The only practical (and free and open and what not) alternative to IRC is (IMHO) Jabber / XMPP.
There are many console and command line clients available, as well as graphical and even web-based.
Self-hosting is easy (I'm doing this for my company), but many good, free servers do exist.
Most of them have logging enabled, incl. access to logs via web pages.

...? All my IRC chat clients have logs...?
Even xchat has a log.

Don't expect all countries where devs are to have fast internet.
You can have your client running on your system at home and connect from anywhere using your phone, laptop, etc.
Even with a 64kbit/s or lower internet speed.
Heck, my parents have 300kbit/s at the moment!

The client at home runs reliably and logs everything. And I can connect even with the slowest internet connection whereever I am.
And even if the connection is lost, I don't miss anything, as my client at home is still connected.

So... what other system you mentioned here has that feature?

There are. I personally use matrix.org, as it has a gateway to freenode (IRC).

To join the pyra room in freenode using a matrix client (that is, "riot" on mobile devices, "nheko" on Linux), you have to use the following room name:

#freenode_#dragonbox-pyra:matrix.org

Be patient the first time you connect to a IRC room through the matrix.org gateway (don't know why), but after some minutes it will work almost as good as a "Native" riot room -- almost because i've experienced splits from time to time, but that's the nature of IRC...

Pros: a modern client comparable to Telegram, access to freenode, logs, and multi-device support (you can access from both you PC and you mobie devices, replying from one device removes the notifications in the others, etc). You also gain federation as in XMPP (but it's not XMPP) and ability setting up your own matrix server (it's similar to setting up an XMPP server).

Cons: another messaging network! Your friends will kill you, because you converted them to telegram, signal, threeema or whatever X-). Also: lots of rough edges (nheko is under heavy development, the current server is a reference server in python, etc).
