GPD WIN 2

166 backers in 2 minutes is still pretty darn impressive :)

Really? I don't really think so.
A huge hype has been created (with the videos you posted yourself here, etc.), so a lot of people were waiting for it and immediately ordered when it got live.

Even the Pyra managed to get quite a lot of preorders within the first few hours (a couple of hundred), and I didn't promote it ANYWHERE outside the boards (as I didn't want a huge promotion until the Pyra is finished and ready for delivery).
The Pandora had over 3000 orders within a week (though I can't really tell how many we got within the first 2 minutes as our servers all broke down due to the heavy load).

So I don't think that was really surprising here :)

Well there was like a 1-2 tyear leadup to the PYRA pre-order, and people had been posting about it on other forums.

I even wrote into liliputing to get a story up on the pre-order https://liliputing.com/2016/05/dragonbox-pyra-pre-orders-begin-open-source-handheld-gaming-pc.html

But that's nothing compared to the marketing that happened here :)
Besides, the GPD Win 2 is a finished product whereas the Pyra had ALWAYS an unknown shipping date and a huge disclaimer that everything can go wrong on the preorder page.

I did everything to keep the random customer away (which is good, as that's the reason we don't get a lot of refund requests).

That's not necessary for the Win 2, as GPD can easily pull that off. They have proved that a couple of times and they have the experience, which is great :)

Crowdfunding for me still is: A couple of guys have a good idea but can't fund it. The crowd that loves the idea supports it. That's the original idea, but sadly, crowdfunding platforms have moved away a bit... these days, it's more a "how big is my market?"-marketing tool for companies. Oh well, that's just my moaning here, I dislike the direction this moved, but you can ignore it as personal ranting :)
;)

Let me help you get your personal rant off the ground.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought there were problems with sourcing the Snapdragon in the past.
I do not remember if that was related to a minimum order quantity or if they were the party that wanted control over the hardware design.

I didn't say we'll target the Snapdragon.
It might even be a bad choice because of probably bad Linux support.
It was simply an example of how much powerful the new Processor might be.
The gap might be as big as Pandora - Pyra. We are already 2 Generations past OMAP 5 now and the A15->A57->A72->A73 jumps are pretty big.

Some impressive videos there, makes me even more desperate to see what the Pyra can do.

If it doesn't run linux, doesn't that disqualify it for the audience of the Pyra? It's almost like comparing the OMAP5 against a pot of yoghurt or something.

And I've said before, what's the wattage of that part? I guess they'll want you to sign an NDA before they'll tell you, but we don't know what sort of thermal limits that case and current cooling solution implies. I get the feeling you can't simply add logic units to make a more powerful processor while ignoring the thermal envelope - although presumably newer chips are printed at yet smaller scales which will offset that thermal growth somewhat.

I was thinking of an other SOC with similar specs.
It was just an example of what we might get as a CPU upgrade.
There are other A72/A73 SOCs out there. Snapdragon was just the first to come to my mind.

Oh, then I misinterpreted the gist of your post. My apologies, good sir.

Indeed. I really hope there will be an upgrade ASAP, but let's get the OMAP 5 version out first.

It should be fine, there's open source drivers for the GPU in that.

But that should be used for the DragonBox Phoibos, not the Pyra, because Helio/Helios/Apollo/Phoibos.

So just over a day and the Indiegogo campaign has raised $1,015,743 USD from 1636 backers. That's pretty good
