Shortest newspost ever... for now!

One thing that confuses me about all this: if there's only one set of moulds, why does it matter that one company has 16 injectors while the other only has 2? It's not like you can parallelize the injection of a single mould, can you?

Each plastic part has one mold (some smaller ones share one mold though, like the battery cover and the lid).

So we have:

  • Bottom Part
  • Keyboard Part
  • Lid Backside
  • Lid + Battery Cover
  • Stylus + Nubs + Shoulder Buttons + Stylus Holder
  • Sealing pads for the speakers
So that's six molds for the Pyra case. With two machines, it takes 3 times longer than with 6 machines :)

I thought a "set" of moulds means you have one pair for the base, one pair for the keyboard grill, one pair for the display back, etc.
edit: ninja'd

Because FormAction might push off the run of Pyra cases in favour of those that will bring in more money.
That's not the way it seems ED's been describing it though. Maybe it's a language barrier thing, but he's used specific words to indicate that this other company can strictly make more in less, 2 weeks vs "a lot faster", which reads to me like somehow more presses means absolutely more cases per hour.

Ah, ok, yeah, that's fair. I thought I remembered reading somewhere that they'd gotten everything into two moulds. My mistake.

As ED and Pocak explained above, a case is made out of six moulds. If they've only two machines they need to make the parts, wait for the moulds to cool, swap them over and put new ones in. If they make all 500 in a go, they need to do the cool down swap three times, and we know they're not going to do that as they've still got more test parts to make.

I guess it does mean the other place would probably be the better place to be testing moulds at, because they could have them all installed, and still have six machines free for other stuff. But to do that would be problematic for other reasons.

@EvilDragon It's time you equip yourself with @Neelix ' color sample:

Dark Red - Oi! Oi! - Dark Red - Oi! Oi!

Great idea with the transparent cases, but there is probably a demand for more than 500 sets.

And all this talk about scratch resistance... am i the only one who loves the heavy used look full of scratches?

@Elw3 IMHO, there are materials/paints which gain character with wear and scratches, but there are also those, which just gain shittiness.
Also, wouldn't it be cool to deflect all those stabbing attempts on the daily way to work/back home with your Pyra and further disencourage those evildoers, them seeing, they didn't even leave a mark? Or something ...

Transparent and scratched aren't a good combination in my opinion, but the rugged, 'beaten yet unbroken and working perfectly' look works for me (it's also a bit Steampunk, which I like)

So... I really like the sound of the glass fibre reinforced, yet slightly less scratch resistant cases, but an keen to hear more updates and info about the various options.

Exactly. An example of the good kind would be any unpainted Game Boy that has wear and smoothness where fingers and especially thumbs (around the buttons) have been on the case, with some scratches and dings. An example of the shitty would be...um, the silver or platinum cases of the Pandora. Sorry if I step on any toes with that. They look nice when new, but not so good once they get cracked, scratched or scraped.

Steampunk would only come into play if the case was wood and brass, or has pointless stuff all over it, as has become that fashion in the last decade or so. The above video probably shows that. Heavily worn wood and brass might be nice, but give me metal or fiberglass reinforced plastic and no paint or outer coating color and let me distress and age it through use.

Yeah, my understanding was more than a little off. Still, the more profitable orders would probably go ahead of the Pyra at FormAction, if they ever got done. We already know the other company has delivered for the quantities ED will be ordering, I think. Not sure how many pieces he has ordered from them in the past. Still probably a smallish order/run.

Thanks for asking. Helped with my understanding of how it works. Now I really want those molds moved. Since the plastic won't be there until Friday, who knows what year those 500 clear cases will be finished. At least the lack of color and extras should make it a little easier and quicker to get them done.

Despite all the things holding up case production, at least it isn't so far away ED can't take a trip to check things out, and the molds can/will be moved.

What would clear plastic and fiberglass cases look like? Might be interesting. Oh, and maybe the new company could try out a glow in the dark mix to see how it turns out (and a set could go to our most vocal prototype orderer...that is the main reason I mentioned it). I still need to see pics of results to pick what color I want, if there is a choice other than clear and whatever the first run is. If they are structurally sound and fit properly I might accept a left over from a test run (still looking at those other colors FormAction did). Might be better if it is beat up and extra ugly so I won't be scared to shove it in a pocket and take it with me everywhere.

I am also looking forward to whatever color ED likes or wants as The Master Pyra that stays in the dragon lair or his pocket.

Is there a realistic chance we are within 6 months of seeing units in the hands of customers?

They are probably a better option than dragging them on a chain behind a car to the new company. Won't ED's contact be there to oversee pickup, transport and drop off?

So... Sadly no pictures of the production today, as FormAction was already finished with it when we arrived (yes, seriously!)

I'm now sitting at the airport waiting for my flight (which leaves at Gate 13... That's a good sign, right?)

I'll post a small update later (though not as extensive as the last ones).

Thanks for all the detailed status updates! One can really learn a lot about the struggle during the production of a new device!

I have a few questions regarding the state of today's cases: How ist the quality of the new cases? Are the transparent material and the dimensions good enough so that meaningful prototype tests can be done? Which small fixes are still missing? Are these cases suitable for the prototype pre-ordereds?

ED great updates and very educational, do have a little question in regard to the FormAction molds.

The molds presumably have been machined from a suitable material for the target plastic FormAction intend using right. Well if we moved to the new manufacturer will this same mold material be suitable for a fiber glass filled composite material? With fibre-reinforced plastics (FRP) and injection molding typically mold life is drastically reduced in caparison to non-frp.

Maybe the run we're talking about is well below the expected life but thought to ask anyway.

Can i buy all 500 sets of transparent cases and sell them for a premium on ebay?;)
Don't you dare! :)

my flight (which leaves at Gate 13... That's a good sign, right?)
13 is my lucky number! It can't be that bad for you either. This will go fine.. :)

I'm still not sure whether to buy just the two or maybe even a third case that I can take apart and apply mods to, like my idea for a small e-ink-display on the backside of the lid.
And I think I'm not the only one who has similar plans for their Pyra :)
