What's that game?

WizardStan gave that first one above. Despite my dislike of lots of random strangers I have no interaction with looking at my request for assistance, I checked out how they do things over there, and it gave me more confidence in that community.

I will check out the other one first. Thanks.

Edit: Doesn't look like there is much activity at that second link, so I guess I will go for reddit. If they figure it out I will post the title here.

Damn! Now I wonder if this kid could have imported that game or something. I know I got some imported GB games a few years later. That would make things more complicated. Pretty sure it was at least in English.

I posted all info I could remember at the time on that subreddit(?) using their form. The discussion here helped a bunch. I hope my babbling won't make things more difficult.

Well, most imported japanese games, especially RPGs are in Japanese, so I doubt you played an import.

Yeah, and I doubt he or his parents knew where to get import games back then. There is a tiny chance that it could have come from the UK or Europe, which is probably worth noting if they got some games before the US.

Still no luck on reddit so far, with the closest suggestion there being a couple of the Dragon Warrior/Quest games. I hope my thread doesn't vanish into oblivion before I find it.

There fit a lot of your Things in Dragon Warior/Dragon Quest 3 on Snes:
Maybe it was this Game?

and here is the NES Version of this Game:

That isn't it, but thanks. That is one I found on my own, plus it was suggested earlier in this thread, and over at reddit. Over there I pointed out that it was missing the character select screen, and the castle town things don't have the right look and layout.

Splintercat already mentioned it on the last page, but did you check out Lufia? The first game is only a year out from your recollection, and I think matches most of your other memories.

I checked out pictures for sure. I'm not sure if I watched a video of it (didn't sound like there was a character select screen), but I was already going to watch it either way since someone on reddit mentioned it again, too.

I need to watch the other videos of all the NES RPGs like that one on the previous page to see if I can find other possible matches. I also spent wrote a bit of time yesterday or the day before going through that site that let you sort the games various ways, and nothing new sounded or looked like a match.

Not that I played them, but on Genesis there was games like Shining Force. Heck, there was a bunch of games for Sega Genesis, and apparently the Sega CD was out in 1992 (Though around October so...) which really expands the possible games it could be.
If your memory is off by a few years and if you're not remembering the right game system, then things really spiral out. Actually.... thinking about Sega. Could you have seen a Master System game?

I don't think it was any Sega console since I don't remember him having one, or any games that were not on a Nintendo console. I left that area in 92, so I would not have been at his house watching games later than that. Later, after moving, I did encounter one of the Atari computers, and lots of Sega, and eventually PS, then 2, not to mention N64, but we start to get into recent years pretty quick, and my memory is better, plus I have most of those games still (although I did play NBA Jam and Mortal Kombat, with the green blood :D on a SNES, and never bought those, prolly 'cause I spent so much money playing MKII at the laundromat near my school).

Over at Reddit their were mention of a couple Genesis games, with Shining Force being one of the first (I think it was the first reply I got) but none of them are even really close, as the art is a bit too crisp and flashy. I still check whatever might be a match in case my memories are way off.

I haven't checked Reddit today, but so far they haven't figured it out, so I don't think I will ever find it.

Hmm, thinking about it if you never saw the combat, you might want to expand your search into Action RPGs, or even just straight action or puzzle games. You may also want to consider tactics games.
The list I put together was just games with RPG in the genre. So action, tactics, or maybe even puzzle games may apply.

If you exhaust everything in the nes and super nintendo list, then you might want to expand out to more systems at the time. Memory is a tricky thing.
For instance if your friends were particularly well off, they might have had a neo geo.

Man, how crazy would it be if your buddy was playing some bootleg, or something like a prototype of something. Someone just recently ran across an actual Earthbound Zero cart.
