GPD Pocket

BTW: I'll most likely be the one running the Kickstarter for the GPD Pocket for GPD (as they can't do Kickstarter in China).

So even though GPD has done an Indiegogo campaign for the Pocket , they now want to do a Kickstarter as well?

Yep, right after the Indiegogo campaign, to get more backers.

Some people probably use Kickstarter rather than Indiegogo, and some might've missed it on Indiegogo.
It'll be a bit more expensive, but still way cheaper than retail price.

Wow, seems they are going all out this time. I know they are also going to do a Chinese crowdfunding on JD.com which will start on the 4th of May I believe. Which is par for the course for GPD.
Not sure if they are also going to do a Makuake (Japan) crowdfunding again like they did with the WIN. I'd guess they will at some point, presumably partnering with Midori Electric again.

The GPDwin was also on indiegogo, kickstarter & JD too.... Nothing new from GPD, they are quite good on that side...

@elwing

The WIN wasn't on Kickstarter for the reason ED gave. The Pocket will be their first venture on Kickstarter.

Should be interesting, I have seen a number of other campaigns do both Kickstarter and Indiegogo. They seemed to do ok. A lot of people do not like Indiegogo for their minimal requirements on what can go on there. I often see people commenting saying that

Hum, sorry, I was thinking the third outlet was ks, but I've been wrong, can't remember what was the third one...

@elwing

The three crowdfunding sites GPD used for the GPD WIN are: Indiegogo, JD.com (china) and Makuake (japan)

With Makuake, GPD partnered with Midori Electric who ran the campaign and also did the local Japanese certification for the WIN. So they have in the past had other companies run campaigns for their product

Wow, they are fast (again). I doubt any western company could push out such a device in (compared) such a short time. If the case is real metal I'm even more impressed. Trackpoint mouse solution is also neat, brings a little bit Think Pad in. However, glare-display is a no-go for me, I hope one day non-glare capacitive touchscreens will be invented (I've never seen one!). Or go resistive like Pandora/Pyra does.

I know the Pyra shouldn't be rushed out but some haste should be made imo.
With the Win, the GPD Pocket and the other umpc stuff showing up on crowd funding sites, a lot of potential customers will be lost as they will most probably not buy a 2nd handheld mini pc.

@EvilDragon Would you also make a pre-order in your Shop? So one could use for example other payment methods!

Ah, well, it looks like GPD were so much in a hurry they now switched to a different distributor for the Kickstarter (at least they said that in an email to me).
I first needed a tax lawyer to check how exactly that would work (as I usually would have to charge 19% VAT to every European backer, but as GPD ships them directly, they would also have to pay the same again as import tax... fun!)
So, found a tax lawyer who will check that (so no one has to pay taxes twice), the fee for that checking would be 700 - 1000 EUR and now GPD switched the distributor (after I told them about that).

And after I spent quite a while checking out how to do that... awesome... :D

Well, whoever does that now... I hope he knows enough about tax laws, as anything could happen if it's not done properly... (it could be he'd have to pay VAT for the GPD Pocket to every European customer himself afterwards... with for example 1000 backers and a price of 400 EUR, that would be more than 70.000 EUR he'd suddenly have to pay... he may also be fined... or maybe he's lucky and nothing happens).

Anyways, that's only for Kickstarter.
I will most probably put up a preorder page on my shop as well, as soon as they let me know the distributors price.

Of course, you'll get the usual top-service from my shop then :)

Whenever I've bought anything from outside the EU above the ~20GBP limit and it's been spotted by the post office, I've ended up having to pay VAT and other duties plus a handling fee at the post office. I wasn't aware of a way the sender can pay those fees up front for me, but I'm no expert on these things. It would certainly avoid a nasty surprise on delivery.

Maybe they will get a US company to do it. Would make it simpler I suppose

I'm relieved you won't have to handle that Kickstarter.
I was worried it would canibalize the time you already don't have.

Not really. It wouldn't take that much time and it could give a serious cash injection for everything Pyra-related as well :D

The Pandora while having less competition at the time of it's release, also had a shit ton of quality control and production problems, that I'm sure ED is trying to avoid with the Pyra. I agree time is an enemy of sorts, as there are some decent comparable products recently released, as well as more down the line, but if the Pyra has any significant defects or production issues after the fact, it could sink years of work and positive public opinion.

Anyone who really knows what the Pyra is about, and what it can do, will still pick that over most others devices. And those customers who would rather a GPD device, are probably not that interested in the Pyra to begin with, or will get both anyways, as a cheaper alternative to the Pyra.

My Pandora had significantly less issues than most, and I still had to deal with 3 returns I believe, as well as some replacement parts over the years. Those kinds of issues for an over $500 device ain't gonna fly with a lot of people, so while time is an enemy of a project like this, quality is an even bigger issue to long term success, and one can't exist without the other. To stay the course this long to make the best device possible, it would be rather silly to throw all that away, just to get it out faster, and face possible big time issues. We've all been there and done that, so however long the Pyra needs to insure it's best chances of success, then that's what needs to be done.
