N handhelds have always done quite well for third parties, always having the best of the install base despite the best efforts of Sega, Sony, Bandai and SNK. If this does bring the two strands together, perhaps they can bring some of those devs with them from the handheld side.

No 3rd parties are going to support the NX unless "N" is paying them to do so
They may just do that this time around. Nintendo has a history of selling consoles for profit unlike Sony and Microsoft which sell hardware at loss and hope to make up the difference with software. If the NX is the same it might be economically feasible for them to bribe a few third party studios to port things to the new platform just to boost the install base. They've said they've learned from mistakes, and one of the primary complaints in the industry is that they just assumed third party developers would want to develop for them, but that didn't pan out because they lacked first party titles to drive initial sales making it not very economical for third parties to invest in. The 3DS was suffering from this same problem when it was first released, and they only managed to turn that around with a massive slash.
So this time around I predict two things:
1) heads out of asses, have a number of games ready to go week-1. None of these teasers of "six months" or whatever, they need at least one major release day one with more following shortly after. Whether it's a Mario or Zelda or Pokemon doesn't matter, they need a big hit to drive hardware sales from the start, and a couple more over the next few months (not 6) to keep it going.
2) investment in third party games, in whatever form that takes. They've already proven willingness to do this, that's why Bayonetta 2 came to Wii U. If they do the same thing for other titles a couple of times in the first few months they will seat themselves pretty well.
This is assuming, of course, that the "lessons learned" were actually the lessons they should have learned.

I'm hopeful the new guy running the show is more business savvy than Iwata, but I'm still hearing the same dumb statements from just about everyone else, that they have been spewing for ages.

The new boss doesn't talk much, which is good, "as it is better to remain silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt". He seems to be more focused, but only time will tell how much of the NX is of his making, and what is left of Iwata's reign.

Making money on hardware was great ages ago, but now they need to considered other avenues of how to compete. Even now that the Wii U is super old, they still continue to over charge for it. Even without a redesign, the parts used in it are way old, and should cost next to nothing to produce, but they can't or won't sale it at a reasonable cost. They do the same for games, they have sales hardly ever, and games that are years old can still be full price, it's beyond ridiculous.

When something suites them, their all for it, but if not, it's wrong and no one should bother. Honestly, the gaming market at large just no longer cares about "N". My son is 10, so he loves all things "N", but that's also because I won't allow him to play some of my more teen and adult titles. Once that is opened to him, "N" will be left behind. Then, you have consumers like me, who grew up with them, and have fond memories of great games and ideas, and for me personally, they are just a shell of their former selves.

They are constantly stating how they aren't in competition with MS/Sony, and how they don't do what they do, but in reality, they do. They paid to get Bayonetta 2 which was great for gamers, but a complete waste of money for them. GTA failed on the DS for the same reasons B2 was never going to sale well, or move hardware, it's an "M" rated game on a family device. The 2 don't work together. Technically "N" owns Bayonetta 2, but if they didn't, it would be on the ONE/PS4 by now and selling way better.

They still have much to offer the market, but unless they can find the proper way to live in the current gaming climate, with solid competition they are doomed to repeat the same failures.

not sure if this has been discussed:
http://www.nintendolife.com/news/20...trol_options_gives_another_spin_on_nx_reports

this seems like a really good idea, since i tend to wear out my buttons (especially analog sticks) playing smash bros... it'd be great to have them easily replaceable. but of course, if they don't last very long in the first place, i'd be annoyed, too...

[edit], oh, and also because i hate the ABXY SNES configuration for playing smash bros. gamecube BAXY was the best.

If these are true, which I doubt(at least based on years of "N" patents that never happen), but if true, I just see this as more confusion to a market that is already very confused by most of what "N" does on the regular. I'm not going to put to much in to this.

I'm sorry, but the controllers of the last 2 generations have been fine, and besides just trying to do something different for the sake of it all, this really doesn't seem to serve a legit purpose to me(besides fleecing consumers out of dollars for extra attachments). The controllers as they are, happen to be an industry standard, and as many buttons and sticks can be used, or just a few.

Sure, controls can break or get damaged, but I think in almost 40 years of gaming, the last controllers I broke where in the early 80's(when I was herder on the controls, and they weren't built as well), and to buy a new one isn't a huge deal, as they are often on sale, and these attachments will probably be at least $20 per one, so I really don't see the need.

But of course, depending on if a screen is included or not in the controller, a modular set up may work out, as a controller with a screen would be rather expensive to replace, but it also looks very similar to the tablet of the Wii U, which they should be trying their best to move away from(as quick as they can run).

There's a few (unsubstantiated) reports doing the rounds now on the next gen Nvidia chip the NX may end up using http://www.fool.com/investing/2016/08/25/report-nvidias-codename-parker-to-power-the-upcomi.aspx
Sounds promising if true, I have a Shield TV that uses the X1 chip.. & it is a fantastic little box with great gaming performance if Parker improves on the X1 significantly as is being suggested and coupled with with the fact that it will be tailored for a specific platform/device and Nintendo's inner circle of devs uncanny ability to achieve incredible levels of performance on it's hardware.. I'd say the future is pretty exciting.

Just occurred.. if it turns out to be true that the NX is going to use Nvidia's upcoming Parker chip and it's as potent as has been suggested and that it's a home/handheld frankenconsole how many minutes do you think we will we be able to use the handheld for before we need it's battery in a backpack?

I love these rumour sites. "I have absolutely nothing to back up any of this, but you can totally trust that these are legit rumours and not just a wishlist of random things I made up that sounds plausible. I have a website!"

It will invariably be quite different to what all the rumours suggest. I don't see Nintendo releasing something bland and generic but will it be exciting? Fingers crossed.

Sadly, them releasing something "generic" is all I personally see them doing. The DS and probably the 3DS are really the only system they have had, where I think the ideas where good, and have been improved upon. The NES and SNES where great, but since then, it has been gimmicks each time, and floundering with each new console in favor of the tides.

The N64, GameCube, Wii and Wii U all offered good things, but the negatives I think dominated each generation. I see the NX having something that makes it "unique", but that same thing will be it's Achilles heel as well, as "N" has always had these half baked ideas that they never really support past 1 or 2 really good games, and when they don't do anything with the specials features, why would any 3rd party?

In the end, they should just stop with trying to be unique, and just get back to making the best games possible, which in recent years, quality has falling greatly, and all I see them doing now is shooting for another Wii level success, instead of making great games that will sale hardware.

I would really love to see a great system that offers great games, and with the possibilities of it being handheld based, I'm hopeful, but just seeing the "fruit" they have released in recent years, I honestly just think it will be more of the same, as I've seen nothing from anyone working there that indicates any level of good "change".

Hey guys/gals, the NX is finally getting revealed tomorrow so check your local listings for times. I'm in the US, and it runs for me at 7am PST.

It's only a 3 minute video, so don't expect to much, but we should finally get to see this damn thing, and what the official name will be at least, and for sure whatever the new gimmick is. Maybe a game or two if we're lucky.

Thanks for the heads up. Hopefully the gimmick doesn't get in the way too much. If it something like being able to use any past Nintendo console controller I might use it as an excuse to finally try getting an Extreme Green N64 one, and also try out those replacement sticks for it. I haven't been following the rumors and what they have been up to except what gets discussed here, so I don't rally have any good guesses. If it is a handheld/portable that doubles as a home console it might work out. I suspect I will be seeing one in my home shortly after release either way (not that I have used the Wii U much, and I don't even know if we have a New 3DS...I think we might have a Zelda one, and the person we got that for never seems to use it).

I don't know if it's due to the difference in time zones, but to me your post's post date is displayed as:
Code:
Oct 20, 2016 at 7:27 AM
In that case, NX is _NOT_ getting revealed tomorrow, but actually _today_.

The reveal takes place on thursday, October 20th.
