Could you please disable automatic Media Embedding for (most) Links? I mean look for example what Scripts are Active on the Retro Thread:
2016-07-24-092900_1280x800_scrot.png

And without these Scripts i can't even see the Links.

Yes, this annoys me too, especially for twitter posts for some reason. I do wonder how many of us there are not running or restricting javascript. I can see why people who are running scripts prefer the embedded media over a plain url link.

Ideally, the forum software would implement a noscript version of those embeddings, so it works for all of us, but as it doesn't currently, ED can either appease us, or people who do allow those scripts. I'd propose there are more of them than there are of us, but hopefully this thread will show us how many of us there are.

FWIW, previewing posts also doesn't work without javascript. There may be a thread for that already, I forget. Also, since you can edit posts without penalty, it's not that big an issue most of the time if you've just ballsed up some BB code.

Edit: There may also be an issue that those scripts are dragging in google-analytics and scorecardresearch, but I don't know many with scripts people that care about that.

Hmm, AFAIR someone asked for the medias to be embedded rather than linked... if I disable embedding, all videos, etc. would be linked.
I think I can also disable embedding for selected services only... what would you prefer?

Please do not disable embedded Youtube Videos.
Many Users of us like them. :)

@lukey
Why do you want to disable that all?
Do you not like Scripts or do you have a too slow Internet Connection?
Or are you angry because that Blocked Scripting Messages in your Browser?

Do you realy want Internet without Cookies,Scripts,Videos,Twitter and others?
I dislike some of them too but there are many Sites they dont work without Cookies.
It is simply Web 2.0 :)

I am shure there are other..more minimal/secured Browsers which work better for you then ;)

Firefox+noscript is pretty much state of the art when it comes to securing browsers (plus a few other plugins by preference, and depending on what plugins you use)

This is not about cookies by the way. He must have cookies enabled to be able to post here I think.

I'd say just disable twitter embeds, as those really don't degrade gracefully. Youtube embeds are fine, as it degrades to a div that still contains the yt link. I don't have a problem with imgur embeds as I don't even run scripts here normally, and in that case those do degrade to an imgur link.

The issue is when browsing this site on the Pandora, it chokes on certain threads because of WAY too many embedded medias. Perhaps have a limit of 2 or 3 embedded videos per page?

FWIW, I don't use youtube to watch youtube videos - on my Linux computers, I use you-get combined with mplayer. I guess on Pandora there's The Tube or a couple of other options to download yt videos. Consequently I don't need to run any yt scripts, and the embed degrades to a link which I can use with the aforementioned programs.

i use the w3m browser (which has no js), with a custom gluescript to youtube-dl using omxplayer here, so pretty similar setup.
this works nice to watch one youtube video embedded in one page, but i can't currently select which video to play if there are more of them. i have to add more logic there, i guess. ;)
to avoid thinking (it's superhot with thunderstorm like weather here right now) i vote for linking instead of embedding, which is also better to save resources on computers with less cpu-bang like the pandora and other smaller devices. :)

For what it's worth, quoting the original message and then turning off formatting shows the original link in the BB source code.

@ingoreis
I'm more concerned about the Cross-Site Tracking by Google, Amazon and Co. Youtube Embedding isn't an problem, because at least it gives the link to the Video (So the "Video Assistant" FF Plugin can directly launch the Video in smplayer).

Even generic links to kickstarter comments are embedded. I don't understand why that is a thing. If you want to link to the comment-section, drop a link, it turns into a whole iframe.

Only for videos do you get one less click. Otherwise its just more cancer.

Couldn't we still embed videos manually by for example [ MEDIA=youtube ] a1Y73sPHKxw [ /MEDIA ]?
The real problem is the automatic embedding. Being able to embed movies and pictures oneself like it used to be is the ideal way imho.
The problem is the lack of control and nobody wants to embed twitter posts or imgur galleries anyway.

Yeah I don't need all those bells and whistles either. I am able to click a link, that's all the web2.0 I need. There are a bunch of really nice features of the forum like backing up your post if you for some reason don't get to actually post it. I think embedded youtube videos are nice and all, but really not worth sacrificing precious bandwidth for. And also it's not cool for people without js and not wanting certain scripts, so I second turning the bling off.

I'm with Klumpen. It's the automatic link translation that's the problem. If someone wants to embed something manually there's a button for that in the editor.

Not sure if I want that, but I'm sure I want it to still work that way. My Nokia N900 (similar perfomance like a Pandora) has become pretty much unusable on most websites due to useless website bloat.
This is a forum, which means it's mainly a about reading and writing plain text. I shouldn't need any fancy new technology to do that. Even my (soon) 20 years old "museum PC" should be sufficient to do that comfortably.

But I guess XenForo is the wrong framework for that anyway. Even simple quoting gives me headaches:
1. Clicking the "Quote" link under a post.
2. Clicking the only now appearing "Insert Quotes..." Button underneath the editor. This Button is not immediately visible if I quote something from 2 posts back, because I "only" have a screen with 1200 pixels height.
3. Being annoyed that only the content is quoted that the poster I quoted has written, not the quotes he referenced.
4. Searching for the "Previev" button.
4.a. Realizing that it's hidden behind the "More Options..." button.
5. Clicking the "More Options..." button.
6. Clicking the "Preview..." button.
6.a. Realizing that I forgot to reference something.
6.b. Getting mad about not seeing the original thread anymore, because 5. has loaded a new site.
6.c. Going back to the original thread.
6.xyz. rinse, repeat.
7. "Reply to Thread" ... finally *sigh*

This whole workflow is so much easier in phpBB.
Plus, maybe it's just a feeling, but the forum always seems to do something in the background. For example, it always updates the "X minutes ago" footer, even if I left the forum alone for hours. I know the load this actually creates is negligible, but the very concept that it's consuming resources for no use still feels wrong to me.

It took me a while to realise it, but if you click "Reply" instead of "Quote" then it automatically adds the relevant quote to the editor, so you don't then need step 2. The "Quote" button is specifically for the multi-quote feature.

3. Being annoyed that only the content is quoted that the poster I quoted has written, not the quotes he referenced.
This really annoys me too and I wonder if it can be turned off. I understand massive quote pyramids being undesirable, but this is overkill. Sometimes you need the context of what's being quoted in order for it to make any sense.

Preventing people from doing too much silly stuff by deactivating useful features is the ultimately wrong (as in "control freak") way to go.
Nested quotes are useful.

Well, I'm on the fence re auto media. I can see how it stuffs things up for a number of things.

The example given by the OP was where I posted my imgur posts. Somehow it auto embedded the media and the result was horrible. It didn't embed it properly. , it showed a flip book of my images which at first I thought was neat. But looking at the images I realized the images were half cut off. That's why I updated that post soon after and changed it to links.

On the other hand, auto embedding of media works well for Youtube and some others. But on the flip side , if you post Youku video links (Chinese Youtube) , instead of videos auto embeddeing, you get broken links.

Yes, provided 'manual embedding' means clicking on a button and filling in a form. As a BBCode user, I can just about remember how to embed an image, but anything fancier and I'll just link it 9/10.
