Well, we got a number of Pandora-tan's many moons ago, so...

(I'd contribute myself, unfortunately, I can't draw :( )

This Pandora-tan was incredible. I wonder if we could convince the guy who made this to try his hand at a Pyra-tan?

Anyone else feeling inspired? :)

@Fusion_Power: Yeah there was a thing several years ago, back in 2009-2010 i think, one of the designes was -Tj-'s current avatar. Here's some others i liked:

Please, no. This sort of thing makes it difficult to be taken seriously. Cartoon images of curvaceous females have connotations of "teenagers", "basement-dwellers" and "dweebs" -- cartoon images of non-curvaceous females are even worse (let us, please, not discuss it).

Males are generally not so bad -- a Duke-Nukem-like figure, for instance, may work well. It would also better represent the community's gender balance (for better or worse).

For least controversy, any mascot should be an animal or mythological creature. Linux has a penguin. GNU has a gnu. The obvious one for the Pyra is a dragon, of some kind.

...yeah? and exactly how many people did you think were going to "take this seriously", before the INVASION OF THE -TANS!!! To my knowledge, NONE of the Pandora-tans were overly-sexualized. You however, seem to be deriving something else from them that most people AREN'T.

Do you honestly think this community will identify more readily with the digital embodiment of mysoginy & disgustingly offensive alpha male bullshit? If anything, I think you have your demographics switched around...

Sadly (or perhaps, not?), the iPhone-lovin' crowd will never likely take a shine to the Pandora/Pyra, or similar devices.

Check your stereotypes at the door. YOUR "connotations" ARE inaccurate. This community doesn't fit into your perceived mould.

p.s. : IF the pseudo-mascot must be an animal, (yes, Evil Dragon is responsible for the Pyra), a phoenix would still be more appropriate (fire, flames, rebirth, start anew, born from the ashes of its former self, etc. ).

p.p.s. :

Oh... I have a few little surprises for the community when the time is right. ;)

I look forward to that! :)

Do you, by chance, have a web link to any of your other work that I could that I could view?

p.p.p.s. : I just kinda decided I was on a roll with the "p's" and the "s's", so I thought I'd just keep going with it. :p

Oh, I haven't done any *real* art in a very long time...

If you feel like digging up some graves, you can simply search for 'FaeMinx' on furaffinity.

http://www.furaffinity.net/gallery/faeminx/

Though I must warn that what I have in mind for Pyra will have a lot more 'edge' to it...

But you must be patient

As to flavour.... wait and see!  ;)

P.s. Don't expect anything until the new year, or until case colours have been chosen, or at the very least - until I have completed this rather large list of orders for the holiday period.

*I wasn't going to say anything... buuuut seeing as this thread was started...*

No, not sexualized at all; this is what women wear habitually in many parts of the world. Practical dress. Still, probably better than the ones that may be construed to be little girls.

Assuming purposefulness, a mascot exists to, in some way, promote a product or movement, either to the converted or to newbies. So, when choosing a mascot, one must consider the possible messages a variety of viewers may construe. Perhaps this does not apply to your country, but, where I live, there has been, throughout my adult life, a low level of paranoia/hysteria about paedophilia (and, therefore, an excuse, along with terrorism, for mass-surveillance and censorship -- there was a controversy when all of Wikipedia was temporarily blocked because of one dubious image). Given this environment, a community made up mostly of male nerds (*one hand goes up*) discussing the use of a female mascot, with all the examples, so far, being either half-naked or of dubious pubescence, would not look good to any (relatively naive) reasonable person unfamiliar with the obsession with moe (and other crap) in some of the less mainstream and/or seedier and/or dweebier sections of the web.

Do you honestly think this community will identify more readily with the digital embodiment of mysoginy & disgustingly offensive alpha male bullshit? If anything, I think you have your demographics switched around...

I did not mean to literally use Duke Nukem as a mascot, but some other male (indeed, I think an animal or magical creature would be better still, as they are unlikely to offend anyone -- unless it is a pig or a cow or...*), but even if I did, there is nothing particularly misogynistic about Duke Nukem's mere appearance: the alleged misogyny is displayed by actions within Duke Nukem 3D, like interactions with strippers etc.. The Duke looks like a stereotypical action hero (i.e. not a bad mascot, as he was/is) or a wrestler. Similar (less misogynistic?) characters include Serious Sam and Batman.

In my limited experience, a depiction of a male -- even a muscly one with bare arms -- tends to be less offensive than that of a sexualized female, to the usual suspects. The arguments that sensible people wish to avoid tend to concern the depiction of women ([cynicism]as such, it is prudent to avoid all depiction of women, everywhere; including here[/cynicism]).

*depictions of humans tend to be avoided because there is usually someone who would take offence: white male, benefits those who have power; black male, tokenism; female, patronizing, especially if showing much skin. With human depictions, one cannot win.

Sadly (or perhaps, not?), the iPhone-lovin' crowd will never likely take a shine to the Pandora/Pyra, or similar devices.

They interest me even less than the Windows-loving crowd. Indeed, my interest is likely negative.

Being a female myself, I have to say I agree with Haraldur about the pics etc.

As a side note: mythological creature's would be better, though I thought our mascot was already the little Dragonbox dragon. Perhaps we can a make an alternative pyra version or something.

To specify, in regards to Haraldur's first post: I agree with the first part, disagree with the middle part, and agree again at the end

Peace :)

I've argued this point before on these boards on a number of occasions - these images do nothing for the community or the image of geeks worldwide. Why do they have to be women? Why do they have such immature or unrealistic bodies? Why are their clothes either overtly "schoolgirl" or overtly sexual?

It really speaks volumes about the men that want this kind of thing. And even worse, they want to turn a piece of tech into something underage that they can shag. That's really worrying.

D.

I thought we already have the little green dragon, as shown here:

I can't find a high-res/vector version, but I imagine one exists somewhere..?

Alternatively we could just have a flaming (sin➗cos)

So you don't take entire Japan seriously? ;)

The "...Tan" culture is pretty normal there. I like Anime/Manga and I like cute drawn girls. And Pandora was female so it fits pretty well.  To make it more clear, I don't want to live in a world where the beauty of the female body is forbidden! See it like: she is a powerful girl that can defend itself and is self confident enough to stand tall (and wear such an outfit).

Besides that, I agree that the Pyra could be represented by something else, a (female) Dragon or so. I like FaeMinx Art Style actualy. :)

Don't you think that is a bit of a close-minded attitude? Even if you are right, I see no reason to ban "teenagers", "basement-dwellers" or "dweebs" from expressing themselves in this community. Nor anybody else that dabbles in a form of expression which happens to summon a connotation of something or someone you don't like. Your statement is an offensive dismissal of quite a few people in the world, including many adults.

The Pyra/Pandora-tan is just fan-art, not an official mascot. I'm perfectly ok with some less serious topics in the Offtopic section.
