Inside or outside camera?

It's got more space than a typical smartphone, yet less features... :|

Why does it need all that space, when it does less than 1 modern smartphone?
Most smartphones don't try to fit in Full sized SD card readers, a usable keyboard, gaming controls and a modular CPU design. If you can live without these features and want a camera, just buy a smartphone.

Because manufactors of smartphones have this:

And ED has this:

It's that simple.

A large portion of the space in the Pyra is consumed by the battery as well, about 4 times the capacity (and therefore approximate volume) of the iPhone 5 (for reference)

On that note, I'm surprised that no one said they would settle for a smaller battery.

I would like a camera, but I never want my Pandora or Pyra to shut down through lack of energy on a long bus/plane/train trip or even in the course of a normal day if/when I forget to charge it during the night. It is the everything device: audio player, handheld gaming device, mobile computer, phone (Pyra) etc.. As such, one would want to carry no other electronic device around. If the Pyra/Pandora stops, so does the music, the gaming etc.. First world problem, but still annoying to be without those things for hours.

So you want a smaller battery so you can fit in a pinhole camera as a trade off for significant usage time?

No, but I also was thinking that it wouldn't cut into the battery size that much.

I thought the inside camera was more valued in this community, but I guess outside camera people just haven't made it to this thread yet.

Mounting a hypothetical camera in part of what the Pyra has as a battery compartment has a few problems:

  • It would be vulnerable to lens-scrtches, etc, when the device is placed on the table
  • It would have to be put to one side of the (shrunk) battery - this means it would be covered by fingers when held normally
  • it would tend to accumulate finger grease
  • it could only be used with the device held vertically
However, I can't see any other even slightly feasable way of cramming a camera in without making the device unpocketably thick.

Yeah, and it seems like a few don't want the Pyra any thicker at all, even more so don't want the camera to bulge from the case.

I guess a pyra or future pyra device will have to be an XL version to fit the camera in. (Wider L x W) Even then, I'm sure the camera would have to stick out a little bit, at least from what I seen.

I guess for now it will have to be something that mounts on the outside and be "easy" to take off, without modifying the case itself that much. Btw, all those problems are things we deal with phones and tablets. I'm confused about the vertical only thing.

If you shrank the battery to make room for a camera the camera would have to go in the newly created space next to the battery.   Since the camera has to point outwards to be of any use that suggests it would be facing the bottom of the case,  which means that in order to use the camera you would need to hold the Pyra open to 180 degrees and hold it vertically, so that the bottom of the unit faces whatever you want to take a picture of.

It's not enough to just remove features to "make space for a camera",  you have to make space in a place where it makes sense for a camera to go.

Sorry, but still not understanding why you can't take pictures horizontally. Just got to make sure you fingers aren't in front of the camera. Just like I would with a phone.

You can take pictures in any direction you like,   but if the camera is pointed in an odd direction then it's going to mean holding your device in an odd, possibly uncomfortable or inconvenient way in order to aim the camera.

While I do want a camera feature, the premise of this poll is completely flawed. The Pyra will not have any builtin cameras.

The community effort is better spent at finding or creating suitable USB camera modules and/or mods.

As if "the community" doesn't have enough energy to do both. This is a harmless poll, takes a second to answer. Let the guy have his fun.

Oh my 4 votes for removal of the volume wheel  shocking!
Why is that so shocking? While I like the volume wheel myself, laptops don't have one either. Volume can easily be changed through software.
<edit>And yes, I know they often have mute, volume up/down buttons. But those can be added by changing the keyboard layout :p </edit>

I hate software only volume control... I'm fine with button control, but it needs to be controlled by a digital potentiometer or some other hardware method.

I guess I'm oldfashioned but I like it when something crashes that makes sound I can turn down the volume independent of any software.. Kind of a super unbrickable volume controle.... And I do like wheels the most since they don't have a stepsize...

I don't disagree. I would choose the volume wheel over the camera any time. That said, I'm surprised that there are only four votes against the volume wheel.
Is it even realistic? The volume wheel doesn't take up so much space that you could fit in a camera there, does it?
