Pyra Ports Protector?

What's your opinion on getting a molded silicone port cover? (Likely extra charge add-on?)

I had this thought...

Once ED & co find the key mat company, they will have a relationship with a silicone molding manufacturer.

How about a thin molded silicone strip with protrusions matching ALL of the back ports?

Put this on/in the back of the Pyra and it will protect the rear ports from pocket lint, dust AND give it a smooth & flat appearance

It would be held in place by the friction of the silicone 'plugs' in all 5? of the ports.

USB 3.0 OTG, USB/SATa, USB, microUSB, HDMI

Need access to the ports?  Just peel/pull away the silicone mat/plugs.

Is there enough interest in this to justify it as an add-on?

As long as it dont look too weird back there, i would definitly use it. Black on whatever except very dark usually looks weird though.

My Pandora seems to be largely immune to dust, especially compared my my 3DS which is always covered in pocket lint of various sorts. I credit the big lip around the screen sealing the interior, but I also don't have a problem of dust in the ports. Doesn't mean I might not consider buying one of these though, especially if it didn't spoil the look of the thing (or even improve on it, I can imagine).

Don't forget about the ports on the front though.

I thought about the front - but couldn't picture a solution that would stay in place and cover the slots both with and without cards in them.  Best bet for the front is to fill the slots with cards - or use one of those dummy SD non-card that come with laptops these days.

Well I do really like cheese, but I suppose this idea is good too.

I'm not sure, but I rather have the SD slot covered.
The easiest way to 'cover' an SD card slot is to put an SD card in it.  This idea is expressly for covering and protecting the back ports.

It would be nice to have, as long as you can take it away.

Those protectors that come attached to the device are hard to deal with.

If the idea is to stop dust and lint getting into your device, there's still plenty of space above and below the SD card for that.  Like I say though, I've never had a problem with dust on my Pandora, front or back ports.

Something like that but with removable port protector for heach port would be great. Like a light flexible piece of rubber which is attached maybe by friction but whose every protusions are cutted, so that you can remove one and plug for exemple your usb cable and when you do that if the whole is held by friction, the usb cable coud hold it.

This thread reminds me of the Pyra waterproofing discussion.  If it keeps out dust it might keep out rain or whatever it was people were worried about.

I think this is a nice idea. When on-the-go, I don't expect to be using the ports most of the time, and that's also the time when a protector is most useful.

I'm only worried about losing the protector: if it's only held into place by friction, it might accidentally get loose, and if you have to remove it to access the ports, you may forget to put it back on.

Will there still be a lanyard hole in the Pyra case? In that case, perhaps there's a way to securely attach the silicon protector to the lanyard hole (preferably without eliminating the possibility to attach a lanyard).

Good call, I didn't think of that.

Do you use a lanyard?  If so what kind is it?

Can you do research and see what is already available? I have something like that for my nds, so it does exist. But it is plastic parts, not silicone.

Im thinking and empty one of those short usb thumbdrives could do, only shorter. But that might be cumbersome to get in and out.

If its a whole array of silicone it sounds hard to use only one port. And then it becomes something to use when pocketed. For which i would use a case or nothing.

Im not so sold yet on the idea.

This is a must for Japan. Over here all products come with protectors... even HDMI cables!

Would be even better if the protectors were already ON the unit, but add-on is better than nothing.

Wow - what does the back of a TV or AV receiver look like then?  Here it's all exposed ports nestled as close as they can pack them.

May as well be full Pyra covers with magnetized flaps.
Full covers on a clam shell device is pretty silly to me.

The idea of this is just a strip of silicone with protrusions to match the ports in the back of the Pandora.  Likely 10cm by 1.5cm or so.

To access the ports you simply pull the thing out - or the end of it that covers the port you're interested in.

If you have a port you use often and don't want covered, just cut that bit out of the silicone (charge port?).  The rest stay protected.

It should be pretty cheap to set up the mold and produce - silicone is pretty forgiving on fitment.

I see what you are saying, but a cover would protect the whole system and have a different color than the system.
Tho, a cover for the slots and ports would be cheaper and easier.
