Pyra hinge design.

Standard hinge with lockable positions would be nice e.g. DS hinge.
Just don't nick the ds lite design. Bloody 'ell that was awful.    granted mine would never break... .even when I tried too.. I wanted to case the mod the sucker and I couldn't without the hinge being broken ahahha  :D

I think it'd be more sensible and perhaps stronger to have an outer-mounted LCD with a slide-up option for the keyboard, more akin to classic Smartphones like the HTC Evo Shift 4G, HTC Touch Pro 2 or perhaps the PSP GO/Sony Xperia Phone. The slides with metal tracks would be a lot more suitable to heavier use and allow the device to be 'closed' for a more tablet-esque operation. The only question would be the strength of the ribbon cable for the LCD, then.

So that'll be a no from ED.

Sorry, for the fact that english is not my native language and 90% of my todays english was learned through Internet and not at school,  I'm always surprised that people here understand me at all.  :D My little translation tool says "buyed" is a valid word (buyed= Gekauft am, bought= gekauft) but of course it's only a google translation which never was that great when translating content releated stuff instead of single words. ^^"

You don't need to COPY it, you just need to officialy BUY it, you know, even patented products can just be BUYED usualy, most stuff is patented anyways. ;)
I'm just going by what ED said when he was deciding what hinge to use for the Pandora, no sliding mechanisms or rotating hinges because they're patented.

By all means, I hope you took no offense from what I said. I realize that these things can happen. It's just... that was really bothering me... <.<

what about a small sealed pneumatic cylinder, wrapped with a small software controlled heating element. you could software control the temperature and have a reset angle for when you opened the lid and different profiles for different applications  ;)   . there are of course a few small engineering issues such as variable temperatures, cylinder cool down times and unnecessary complexity but I think it would be the best option :p .
Isn't a heating element going to have some costs associated with it as far as battery life goes?  Would it be worth it?  Maybe there are some regenerative cooling technologies we could tap into to reduce the energy expenditure associated with the heating element.

Just my two cents.  I'm not an expert on these things.
I'm preeeety sure it was a joke.
;)

All I want is the screen to stay open at suitable angles for normal handheld use and for laptop style use. Adding any fancy features beyond this is asking for trouble.

It would be nice to go the Shield route and make the hinge stiff enough to allow the top screen to rest at any angle without the need for fixed locking points.

Don't know... Just picked up a Shield so only time will tell but from the feel of the design it is going to stay firm without any problems. It's not held in place by the friction of the case like the Pandora is so opening and closing the lid doesn't eat away at the paint causing it to loosen. The hinge is actually designed to be tight when opening/closing the lid.

I wasn't aware the sliding screen design was patented by any one manufacturer, as multiple manufacturers use the same sort of concept for smartphones with a keyboard beneath it, including HTC (Touch Pro, Touch Pro 2), Samsung (Samsung Intercept), Sony (Various phones and the PSP Go) I can't imagine ALL of them either don't have an agreement or somehow got around the patent...

Keeps the expensive innovation at bay, a win-win-situation to all (share-holders) involved.

IIRC he said that they were patented AND nobody was willing to sell these original hinges as the production was reserved for certain other devices. Like the recent problem for Canonical(?) to get saphire glass: They reported that Apple has bought all available glass produced in the next three years!
