DraStic Nintendo DS emulator teaser video

I have two DS, i'll try.
That seems kinda pointless...  you'd need to have them each displaying one half of a stereo pair to see any 3D effect.

I was only ever able to find one homebrew application that could be used to display a stereo image by turning the unit sideways. And that could only deal with drawings made within the built in editor.

Oh ?

I didn't know only one screen can do 3D at a time ! Is there any other "fun" fact about the DS ?
that's not exact... the DS got two 2d engine but only one 3d engine. but it's still possible to display 3d on both screen... there are some tech demo doing just exactly that using screen copy, but I think it's hackish at best...

and yes, if you got gba programming experience it's much easier to write a 2d game using the 2d engines as they are basically just updated version of the gba engine...

You can't display 3D on both screens at the same time.

You can use the capture unit in order to grab the 3D to a bitmap that the 2D engine can display, then alternate which screen is displaying new 3D vs which is displaying a 2D capture of the previous frame. But this halves your frame rate and wastes two 128KB VRAM blocks, bringing you down from 512KB of texture space to only 256KB.

yes, that was what i was talking about

And it's just a better device in general, than the old Eee I was using anyway - a bit of a bigger screen, a lot thinner and lighter, a lot faster, and a nicer keyboard. The OS situation is pretty hacked, but it works far my limited needs.
This emulator looks AMAZING. Great job as always Exophase, where would we be without you?

I just wanted to ask re: your above comment - what OS are you using on your chromebook - ubuntu? I'm thinking about getting one as my next laptop, but the OS complications are concerning me. I don't mind having to do hackery to get linux on there, I'd just need to know that it will be a fully usable Linux system once I'm done.

EDIT: I really hope the touchpad can work properly, plus other hardware, but particularly the touchpad - I got a crapbook pro from work a couple of years ago and tried coping with various linux drivers for it for a while before giving in and buying a second hand thinkpad... touchpad wasn't the only problem, but it was a huge factor for me. I'm more than happy with the thinkpads nub mouse, I think maybe I even prefer nubs to touchpads now.

I use Ubuntu w/Xubuntu desktop installed (Unity works but I don't like it). It's not perfect - I can't get 3D to work at all although others claim otherwise - but it works for my purposes. Trackpad works fine after you change a conf file, audio works fine after you mess with some settings (but you have to be careful to do it right or you could blow your speakers), wifi, USB, SD, et al work fine. Haven't tried HDMI out yet though.

That's a relief. It's surprising difficult to find info on, though if I got one I could probably do some google-fu I suppose. I'm not too bothered about graphics acceleration as long as desktop apps and compilers work fine.

I don't like unity either... when ubuntu messed everything up I tried the crippled version of gnome 2 for a while but that didn't work too well, so I switched to mint, but I find other things dont work as easily as ubuntu. I'm left feeling a bit miffed with what Linux distro to use right now... I'll probably end up switching to debian or back to ubuntu when I find the time.

Wooooah, impressive

It gets better and better.

Never thought I'd ever see playable NDS emulation on the Pandora

Hey Exophase, I signed up just to say I'm extremely excited with what you're doing. I'm not too sure what Pandora is but I'm a big iPad user and the fact you said you are aiming for Q2 to have something for Cydia (I'm assuming?) makes me quite happy :)

I love reading the updates through this thread and look forward to hearing more in the future! I'm routing for you!

Oooooh more questions!

Will local/Wifi play be possible, both with other Pandoras and with actual DSs?

Will Microphone be supported?
THESE ARE WHAT WOULD CONTROL ITS SUCCESS if you were to commercialize it .

How far are you planning on going, in terms of hardware support?

From what I know, mic should be totally possible. Wifi support on the other hand would be close to impossible especially between a pandora and a DS. Various security/encryption methods have been used to ensure DS's can only talk to DS's and servers for DS games such as mariokart or pokemon. Also, the DS uses ad-hoc which also makes things harder. At most, pandora-to-pandora would work. AFAIK, there is not a single DS emulator that supports linking/wifi/ad-hoc.

No iPad fans allowed here!  Only Pandora fans :D

Maybe you want to trade in your iPad to get the Pandora :D

Just kidding of course! :p

No, not new super Mario bros.

This game is the start of all those horrible easy and linear Mario games.

Great job.

:)
