Need to find new usage options for Pandora: else selling it and leaving the community

The Pandora is great for use in the bathroom. I use it also while taking a bath (don't drop it though!). In the train and while waiting for the train to arrive. While waiting in the queue at the coffee machine at work. In elevators. In airplanes (economy class). While walking (usually only to play music and view a map). While waiting in any queue (e.g. passport control or security). In the car or bus. When I'm eating alone - e.g. great for IRC chatting or checking mails while having breakfast in a hotel on a business trip. When my wife is shopping for clothes and for some reason I'm with her and have to wait. And so on.

All of this is difficult or not possible with a full laptop, and even with a netbook it's tricky. A (small) tablet or smartphone could be used in those circumstances, but I really like physical controls. I own a laptop, an iPad, a small netbook (Sony Vaio P series), and a Pandora. When I'm travelling I always take the Pandora with me, and also the full laptop if I need it. I used to take the netbook and/or tablet, but those have become redundant now; the tablet is essentially just used as a web browser and GPS, the netbook I don't use at all anymore.

Intersting parallel. I went one week on holidays and this was the first time I did not bring my netbook with me. Instead I brought my pandora and it was well enough to do what I needed to do.

walkthrough in point-and-click style:

.give pandora to craig,

(little animation comes: craig hammers it on a table then shows up a shiny metal coloured pandora. ta-da)

.get it back from craig

.charge battery to 50%

(buzzing noise from the charger + smoke effect)

.remove battery

.put battery into holder

.put pandora into original box

.put accessories into original box

.put box on shelf

first part ends.

(player collapses into a chair)

keep your pandora. you might want to play with it later.

(i have at least ten 'boxes' as i never sell my old gadgets.)

There are some synthes and sequencer ported already afaik and work with usb mididevices, so what are you waiting for? Make some music :)

SunVox and Seq24 are pretty quality programs that are also very intuitive to work with. But I already own a Korg TR61 synthesizer workstation with a Korg Padkontrol (MIDI controller) hooked to it, and have a Korg Kaossilator 2 (hardware pocket synthesizer). So I'm pretty much covered with making music. I'm more of a hardware person really.

However, I am planning on making less videos and make more music, or completely switch over (deciding this between now and the end of next week). So I could create music that is potentially used within Pandora games/software and test everything as well. Making videos is fun and all, but as I'm mainly remixing existing audio and video, the final result cannot really be called my own work. It also requires too many hours to come up with a quality result, and with each new video there is more work involved. With music however, this is totally different. It's more fun and involves less work. This also fits more into my study schedule, as I absolutely don't have the time anymore for making quality music videos.

If I had the choice to make music for any community in existence, the Pandora community would be it. So it is a serious option!

If you want to make some background music for my Microbes game, feel free! Currently they are short loops recorded with my Roland FP-7F, and I could use some longer loops...

If you want to make music for homebrew projects a) Put it in your sig so that people know to contact you if they need music!

I believe we had a connections thread somewhere too...

If I ever finish my next game anytime soon, I may have to hit you up for some music...

GO GREEN!

One big advantage of the Pandora is its power consumption.

I`m charging it nearly 100% by solar power, (5W panel with a car battery and a power-cord ending up at the toilet)

If I would still use my desktop for all this mailing, browsing, playing, reading this forum and so on,

I could not afford the pandora 2 ;) hum, it's a damned circle.

one more: I'm just remembering the time when I made my girlfriend totally crazy by taking my not that silent laptop in bed for some more browsing and stuff...

@ Wootson

Option #1: Always-on IRC device. Never miss any of the latest openpandora gossip/bile! Simply join #openpandora and leave it logged on. Leave your pandora plugged in 24/7 for puffy battery experience.

Option #2: Bedtime entertainment device. Lying down in bed with your laptop to watch a movie is kinda... yuck. The cooling fan turns way up taking away from your movie experience and your duvet starts to cook. Tablets are a bitch to support in the right position. But wait - you have a Pandora! It has excellent audio, has a decent screen and fits perfectly atop your beer belly. Careful with those belly laughs!

Option #3: ICBM control system. Hey, Sony was concerned about the PS2 being used as a missile control system by terrorists - what's to say you can't do the same with your Pandora?

Option #4: Toilet entertainment device. 'Cause it's easier than fapping with a laptop in your hand.

I noticed when watching Netflix in bed, that since the Pandora is a clam shell I can lay the Pandora on it's side, so the image is proper when I'm laying on my side. My phone is annoying as It needs to be propped up and always falls down.

Man, I hate that, especially when the phone starts switching the image 90 degrees because it thinks you're watching it from the other direction when you're really not. I can't watch or play games on my phone on my right side, but left side works fine.

Also btw completely offtopic but related question: Does anyone else start getting tears in the lowest eye when lying on the side in bed while watching something on your phone?

I use mosh to connect to a machine that doesn't shut down, on which I have a screen session running with an irc client (irssi). You can leave the mosh session open all the time, switch wifi on and off or suspend the pandora all you want: as soon as you re-establish a wifi connection, the mosh connection nicely resumes.

if u have a baby/toddler browsing on pandora is much more convenient than taking baby to yr laptop.

(typing this and surfing while my 3month son is on my lap.)

That depends. Were you watching The Notebook? But I've had that watching TV too. You've probably never experienced it because most people don't watch TV sideways unless they're sick or really tired.

Great! Now I just need to learn to play the piano (it was one of those things I got for Christmas that I never really learned to play). It always seemed so intimidating...But the good news is I found some books at a music store closeout sale.

Well, there you have it. If you help develop something great for the Pandora, it would be nice to experience it firsthand. It's like those people who donate to sperm banks. Sure, they have children, but they don't really get to experience them. (No offense to guys that do this. I'm trying to make a point.)

As others have said it's difficult if you always have a laptop with you but for me the portability side is the key. My Pandora signalled the final death for my Palm Lifedrive(had to go back to it when my Pandora purple/dead screened on me but it wasn't fun), I suspect having a palm top computing device is something you just get used to having and really miss when it isn't there. Just small things like :

Listening to music/podcasts when walking somewhere.

Having easy access to all your username/password/PINs all the time (in an encrypted file of course :) ).

Between myself and my wife we have over 2000 books so browsing a second hand bookshop and not knowing whether you already have that book is a bit of an issue but always having a catalogue with you makes life easier (same with retro game disks / cartridges if you spot some at a car boot or something).

Also just being able to type in quick memo notes.

I've never really got on with complex note making software but I've setup some very simple html pages that I can fire through in a browser that have lots of information on different subjects. (at the risk of getting flamed by web designers/developers out there most pages consist of <html><body><h2>Blah</h2><pre>Text</pre></body></html> with the occasional a href link ;) .

And, of course, the emulation and games. If you always carry a laptop some of this is taken care of but if you are in a shop or out and about having an always on Pandora is much more convenient than pulling out even a small laptop and booting it up.

Jesus. Really? Remind not to use the conveniences in your house if I ever visit :p
