Nintendo 3DS

However, with it on, your natural instincts just do their work (at which point I reacted with shock, since I was so used to the N64 version), meaning that you can focus on better scores and such, because you're not cramping up your hands with endless rolling.
That sounds quite interesting. So essentially, your subconscious collision detection works better, I did not expect that.

I'll have to give it a spin when I visit my friends with a 3DS.
I noticed it earlier, though to much less of a degree, in Rayman 3D as well (but that is a slapdash port of a game so good that it's still good regardless, whereas Star Fox 64 3D was put together with the 3DS in mind, and it shows). I usually find that most polygonal platformers are rendered unplayable by the lack of being able to see perspective and the like, but it really makes a difference there, too.

As an example, Rayman 2 originally had two or three particular sections that were ludicrously difficult due to the guesswork that comes from being unable to see perspective in such games, but these are VERY easy in Rayman 3D solely because you're free to concentrate on your actual objectives instead of having to focus on guessing when to press buttons (and from having to continually start over when you guessed wrongly).

A secondary effect is that my judgement of distance and volume in real life has improved, too.

If they make a 4DS, will it improve people's abilities to judge times necessary to complete a task?

Yeah, the next DS version should add smell :D

Everyone wants to smell the poo of a dog when playing Nintendogs :D

I would not be surprised if the next Nintendo handheld was a Nintendo phone, maybe with TV out allowing Wii games to be played from and with the phone itself.

DaMummy, I had that Gameboy, and I had the Gameboy Light, and the Gameboy Magnifying screen thing.

I've had other prodcuts too.

Madcatz and Nyko (along with first party) have put out a ton of products. I havent forgotten.

My opinion however is that there has never been such a HUGE change to a system that I feel wont be a 1-4 game addition (like a PS2 Harddrive, or an any-system's 4-player multitap back in the 16bit days)...this is something that I truly think will become standard in future revisions.

To me, this isnt just a "oh and we'll sell this...and this...and people can get this for their system...." like an extended battery, or a cool carrying case. To me this is kinda like Craig said "Oh shit! We gotta quit being stubborn and start trying everything"

I see the conversation like this: (mostly in jest)

Nintendo: Ok look Capcom, I hate to say it, but we REALLY need a blockbuster beyond our first-party games. We want you to have this honor to help lead us in the future. We're Nintendo, you want us and our Golden Seal of quality! (From the NES cartridge days).

Capcom: Haha uh guys. I dont think you're really in a position to be "giving us this honor". It's more like you need to really ask nicely and we'll consider it. We already pulled MML3 on you. Dont blame us for that one.

Nintendo: Hey wait a min.... .... .... Ok Capcom Please give us Monster Hunter 4, and you better throw in MH3G too.

Capcom: haha! Nope bitches, sorry cant without more buttons. We're preparing for the Vita, Sony listened to its customers.

Nintendo: Ok look. This isn't funny anymore. What will it take. We want those games.

Capcom: Fix your 3DS. It's that simple.

Nintendo: Fine. We'll add all you need, we'll release it before your game is ready.

Capcom: Always a pleasure doing business with ya! By the way, MH4 coming to Vita still too, this aint no exclusive guys.

Nintendo: Ya whatever. Just wait until we hit the jackpot again, it'll happen, you'll wish you didnt mess with us.

End.

Craig,

Do you think Nintendo could handle the phone industry? Sure it'd sell as a start phone to kids (like a disney computer, or something with simple easy controls and limited options) ...but not even Sony's first foray into gaming-phone industry was truly that impressive. The Xperia (while neat to read about) in my opinion was 2 years outdated by the time of release.

^ I somewhat needed it as well... I used to keep cutting my fingers open whilst cutting fabrics. :p Not anymore, though, thankfully.

I don't know, I do wonder if they and Sony can survive in the new Phone world, they would have to switch their business model to updating the 'phone' every year at or 18 months at least.

Also there might be some awkwardness with an adult having a Nintendo phone, they have a bit of a mountain to climb in the next few years to adapt.

Craig,

I agree with the need to adapt. Unless Nintendo can somehow continue to make their millions focusing on kids 6-13 (or whatever their target is), they're gonna have to change their ways. It has been documented repeatedly that the gaming community has grown older. All those Nintendo 8-Bit gamers (like myself) didnt quit playing video games when they turn 21, or even 31. For this "new" market, Nintendo is ill-prepared. Their are games that are exceptions, and their is plenty of older players who have the Nintendo devices, but they definitely are at a disadvantage when compared to the 360, PS3, or PC. That's where most of my fellow gaming friends are. As well as the bazillions of military who pickup devices during deployment.

While I admit they scored a big win with the Wii, I have to wonder how long they can continue this "it's not just about graphics and processing power, it's about innovation like touch screen, 3D display, and motion-controls too" phase and still stay dominant.

I'd be very surprised if Nintendo did this. It's so completely counter to both Nintendo's business model and hardware strategy.. How in the world are they going to compete against high end phones with their low end, high-margin dated garbage that is meant to push their modest-tech first party games?

Phones with gaming controls aren't in demand at all, all they need to do is look at the big flop the Xperia Play is. A phone without gaming controls would be a massive compromise on Nintendo's part and would be even harder to differentiate from everything else out there.

Fortunately for Nintendo their big handheld demographic is still children, someone just needs to convince parents that their kids don't need expensive smartphones.

I think that if Nintendo did a gaming phone and it was their new console, not some oddball spin off, then it could work.

Until there's nothing left to innovate outside of graphics. I think that day may be rapidly approaching. Or I've just not got a very good imagination.

I'm sure there's plenty to do. It'll just get stupider and stupider ;)

3D has been off to a pretty "meh" reception.

When will we see pixel based 3D engines? I want to be able to blow realistic holes in everything and make buildings fall over.
