I'm looking for a decent RPG to play on the Pandora.

I've not played many but I'll give a list that I have:.

Zelda Series - No complaints here.

Final Fantasy 7 - Random Battles :(

Diablo 1 & 2 - Loved both

Dungeon Siege 1 & 2 - Loved both

Titan Quest - Just average

I would like something I can dip into on lunch / while commuting.

Many thanks

chrono trigger, final fantasy vi (labled iii), mario rpg on snes

chrono cross on psx

I think only ff is the only one I listed with random battles

I was looking at Chrono Cross on PSX, I think I'll got for that if it's not too minty on ebay.

Wild Arms, for the PSX.

Also, you may find the MegaMan Battle Network series for the Game Boy Advance to be of interest. It's not especially unfriendly to dipping in and out of, given that it was developed for a handheld in the first place. :p

Star ocean on the SNES, or Star Ocean second story on PS1, that's easier to find, costs no more than about £12 on eBay last time I checked.

Secret of Mana on the SNES is a very good improved Zelda action RPG. Great music. Great gameplay. Great story. One of my top ten games of all time.

Super Mario RPG is also nice.

Edit: It's for SNES.

SNES/PSX:

Star Ocean

Tales of Phantasia

!

Riviera? I think not! Never seen a game with less freedom in moving...

Mario & Luigi isn't playable on the Pandora,

because it freezes with a very painful noise sometimes and at some points always, at least with GPSP and different roms.

Is there a way to play PaperMario with Mupen at decent speed?

From the list you provided you appear to almost exclusively like the action/adventure style game with RPG elements bolted on. What everyone is listing here is almost entirely JRPG games... there are a lot of great games, but if the random battles turned you off in FF7 you might want to figure out a couple 'best of breed' from the list and go from there.

Given what you like... I'd say try the "Mana" series that was already referenced... Secret of Mana (technically 2) is in English and you can get an English patch for Secret of Mana 3, both of those are on the SNES. The first one is on the Gameboy and the US English version is called Final Fantasy Adventure (because you know... let's keep things not confusing in the US :p ). There are a few more "Mana" series games you can find for the GBA/PSX (and more that I don't think are playable on the Pandora).

It doesn't look like you've dipped your toes into any Tactical RPGs... I might suggest Final Fantasy Tactics for PSX, Vandal Hearts and Vandal Hearts 2 for PSX... there are a ton more but those are a good place to see if you like them. If you want a western Tactical game I'd also suggest the excellent XCOM.

If you haven't tried rogue likes... these are games that you take a turn to move and then the enemies take a turn to move. They are known for being brutal and you really need to take your time to think through problems, manage your resources and turn your environment into strategic advantages. You can find a translation for Shiren the Wanderer on the SNES. There are also a few Torneko games that are less brutal for the SNES/PSX/GBA although the PSX version is the only one with a native English release.

Just wanted to throw a few more options for you out there as it's hard to tell if you'd be interested in the JRPG games or not and the RPG world is immense.

Golden Sun 1+2 (GBA)

Final Fantasy 1,2,3,4,5,6,8,9

As mentioned before: Seiken Densetsu 3/Secret of Mana 2 (SNES) (there's a good 3player-hack too)

There are many good JRPGs out there.

Since when are Diablo 1 and 2 RPGs? I always thought they were hack'n'slash / dungeon crawlers.

Regardless, I second the suggestion for Ultima 7. One of the best RPGs ever made.
