Android gingerbread in a pnd?

R4 did use cyanogen mod, but didn't have all packages, thats because the settings didn't work.

Milkshake, you said you had Netflix working well. For me playback seems very smooth, however it still has an audio delay.. most of my apps have a slight sound delay. I also can't seem to launch the cyanogenmod settings at all, it crashes out.. could be related? I started from scratch twice..

Just played World of Goo during a 1 hour train trip.

It crashed a few times back to Android "desktop", but only sometimes after completing a level (or retrying it).

Restarting it worked fine and it successfully saved the completed level data, so it was a simple deal of restarting World of Goo.

Not sure if this is related to SGX, a bug in World of Goo (maybe I'm using an old version?) or to CyanogenMod :)
It seams to be vigourously accesing your sd whenever this happens memory problems?

Nope, that only happened once, but then it didn't go back to the desktop, it froze the whole system :)

When it crashes back to desktop, no SD Access issues.

I've gotten that issue of constant SD card access freezing my Pandora completely during World of Goo. Sometimes if I leave it long enough, it'll eventually finish up and quit back to the Android desktop, sometimes it seems to go on endlessly and I need to hard reset the system . Mine is an older 256 MB system, usually running at 800MHZ for Android

Now I created and activated a swapfile in angstrom and started android. Android uses it as expected and I think the constant sd access issue is a bit better, but not gone completely.

Okay, so this seems to be related to some memory issues.

Are there tools to check the current memory usage on Android while running programs?

Anyone else having wifi connection issues with R5? I've tried two different wireless networks and neither will reliably connect or stay connected. Once I boot back into Linux I can connect to either one and stay connected as long as I like.

Edit: I'm using the old 256mg ram Pandora and CPU set to 800mhz.

Had some wifi dropouts, too. Already installed the wifi update?

I think Commander-Beef made a pnd for it on the repo.

I am also having some minor connection issues in Android that I don't notice in Linux. I was able to get back to normal by turning off wifi power saving. Open a Terminal Emulator and type

Code:
su

<wait a bit and then click Allow>

iwconfig wlan0 power off

exit

I don't normally have to do this in Linux anymore. I used to have to, but somewhere in the SZ hotfixes everything just seemed to work better. Or I just never noticed.

Anywho, give that a try; turn off power saving. Stopped constant netflix buffering for me and all my downloads actually finish now.

Made a thread in general talk here for Android games / apps that work well with Pandora.

I've been very pleasantly surprised with how well things run (compared to my HTC Desire) and as suspected using the DPad / gaming buttons makes Android gaming a lot more enjoyable. :)

There do appear to be some weird WIFI issues going on, I haven't done enough testing to confirm this, but I've a suspicion that they may be router / access point related.

I've got a Virgin Media Super Hub which I use for WIFI downstairs and a Belkin N+ (connected via homeplug ethernet to the superhub) for WIFI upstairs. When connected to the Belkin N+ I've not noticed any dropouts / connection issues, whereas when connecting to the superhub the WIFI frequently disconnects / resets. I'll try and do a bit more testing in the next few days and report back.

Can anyone explain why youtube viewing is far superior using Android compared to XFCE? Using the stock Android browser and playing none HD youtube video, works perfectly with my Pandora, whatever I tried under XFCE resulted in an unviewable slideshow.

Android will presumably be using HW acceleration (or a highly optimised SW decoder), which is something we don't (can't) have with XFCE without paying licences for the codec HW decoders, if they even exist.

Also, the reason why netflix, iplayer, itv player etc. work is similar, we could never afford to get their (sometimes secret, DRM) codecs/decoders on the XFCE Pandora.

Android has them as part of the download, which presumably google has paid for, or they are included in the apps themselves.

Mcobit: I didn't realize there was a wifi update. I went to the Repo and installed it.

WizardStan: When I ran the command it came back with an error saying there was no such device as wlan0.

When I try to connect to wifi in Android it keeps trying to obtain an IP. It did connect for about 30 seconds one time and the rest of the time it keeps failing to get the IP. I will try a third wireless network to see if I have better luck. Thank you both for your assistance!

Do you mean Android on the Pandora or other Android Devices?

Well, like already mentioned, Pandora has no HW Acceleration for Browsers or Flash Videos, or even a modern Flash Plugin available.

Maybe there are some dirty litle Tricks to get these drivers and Codecs? There are alot creative people out there, maybe someone found a way to have good quality plugins for ARM Linux Devices? ...just sayin'... B)

It's just the flash plugin sucking real bad on Linux, no amount of optimized decoders would help as it's using it's own crap. Android, as well as youtube being made by Google can bypass flash and play directly.

That's not true at all, device manufacturer is responsible for using patented stuff. If you look at patent related fights, almost always the manufacturer is sued, so if you shipped Android by default without stripping this stuff you'd likely be in trouble. Even stripping video stuff might not help due to various other patents, since you are not in China..
