100% success! (2011-12-24)

^ How much of an improvement would it actually be?

---

If I recall correctly, someone tried running KDE on a pandora and it worked, but filled up all the ram. So a German pandora running KDE would work as well as a US pandora running xfce. Or something?

I don't totally agree as the 3DS is a new console. We can compare that to the DS / DSi where the DSi a slightly more powerfull than the DS, but nevertheless, all the game are compatible between the two console.

There were some games released that while compatible with the original DS had features that were only usable on the DSi. So you only got a limited version on the DS. Which would be similar to this situation I suppose. It happens. Things change. I waited since the beginning of 2009 for my Pandora and had to cancel 2 months ago. it will cost me $150 more to get another ordered, and the only difference is 256MB more RAM. I think in this stage of the game it's a helpful upgrade in terms of making people feel they are getting more for their money. Especially when you consider the Quad Core Vita and it's 512 MB ram will cost half that.

I'm not trying to say anything like "the Vita is better" just that when this much time passes, it can only help the project to have a spec bump, even if it was never used as it appears to give more value for the money. Sure some things will work better on the newer one, but seeing as how I never got to have the older one and would still be waiting, it does help to keep me interested in reordering instead of letting a shiny new toy like the Vita try to sway me from what I really want which is the freedom and abilities of the Pandora. Iw as having a hard time reconciling the fact that having waitied so long, I would have to pay more for the same thing despite the wait. This upgrade is in fact helping to keep me hanging on.

EvilDragon, can you please advise exactly how things might work for folks from the first batch who placed their orders with Craig? Are all of these developments and the new units that will be made going to be allocated to BOTH customer pools, or does Craig have to negotiate with you in some way otherwise the units will be only allocated to purchases from your store? I always get confused when you or Craig mention the two separate stores: sometimes it seems as though the orders are being combined in the batch(es), and other times it seems like you consider them completely different companies.

Nice to hear some progress is being made. I consider my money lost, for the most part, but I still have hope that you guys can pull it together in the end.

Thanks.

The RAM upgrade should allow LibreOffice to run without a swap file, more tabs when browsing, and may help in other areas related to responsiviness if caching is involved. The OMAP 3530 to an OMAP 3730 are literally the same processor at 65nm and 45nm process respectively. The 3730 can clock higher and should tend to be more efficient.

Comparing the TI specs sheets the max stock on processing elements is:

3530/3730

ARM Cortex A8: 600/1,000MHz

SGX GPU: 1x/2x

DSP: 520/800MHz

This can help with native applications, anything that's really borderline, and battery endurance but otherwise shouldn't represent a major difference. The jump to the next proverbial level is a rather large one. I personally don't think it's worth making a big fuss over.

By the standards of those who will declare it obsolete because it doesn't have the latest and greatest, this is pointless. That's not to say if an opportunity shows up that makes it easy to do that it's not worth doing, but we're not talking a big enough difference that it's worth doing it just because.

Thanks.

As written multiple times (each time this question occured :) ), the units both go to Craigs and my old-time-customers as well.

Ed, congrats to the whole Pandora team!

This is big step forward.

I am hoping that you all are enjoying your deserved holidays.

Where can I pre-order the upgrade? :D

Will there be a poll for the casing color/type? (I opt for carbon fiber... )

Thanks. I try my best to stay up to date with developments and see if you've answered every question, but hopefully you understand that I try to avoid visiting the site every day. Easier to be surprised by developments than frustrated by all the obstacles you guys have had.

My only other curiosity is about video cables (not video out, but the actual video cable), as I know that you guys had some issues with coiling the first version into the hinge so you received a new more flexible, more easily coiled cable and said you'd start using them in batch 2. Will any Batch 1 units have the newer cable, or will you try and finish your inventory of the older one and save the newer cable for batch 2? Thanks, and thanks for not giving up on the project. I get teased by coworkers for still having an order in after nearly two years now, but I haven't given up yet either.

Seeing as you're doing all the building and RMA'S isn't it an idea if Craig provides you a list of his pre orders and you send everything directely?

Certainly a way to save time and money.

My second pandora will have the extra ram when it comes.Might sell my current pandora when the time comes. Its all good for me.

Not really, for example ED would not save but spend a lot of additional time (sending x Pandoras to x different addresses, which includes having to look them up (probably contact the person to ensure the address is still valid), package them up and send them individually vs. putting x Pandoras in one big package to just one address).

Besides there's still the fact that Craig and ED each run their own company (and have their own separate budgets). Before Ed would get a share of the total amount of units produced from Craig. Now it's the other way around, and that's all that has changed. So for you as a customer nothing has changed here. You will of course still get the unit from the shop that you ordered from. Because that is also where you paid for it!

Slight diversion, but a recent news update said ED was working on a commercial/animation. Hows that comming along?

Ummm, where was that posted?

I am planning some commercial / animation, yeah, but not yet. Still a lot of other things to do.

I WAS doing some commercial just after the prototype test run, but that was for a customer of my TV production company, nothing related to the Pandora.

Ok, thanks for the clarification  I was probably a little confused. Carry on everybody ;)

Glad to hear you are working with a serious company now. So, how many Pandoras are left to deliver on batch one?

And can you update the Pandora for an A15 dual core and a rogue PowerVR 6 GPU while you are at it? :p

It depends on the price I can sell the old unit. If I can sell those for 200 EUR (a used Pandora with half the RAM), then I can swap a PCB for about 130 - 150 EUR.

Don't forget that I'll also lose sales with that (some users who would've bought the big version might buy the small one), so this needs to be included in this calculation as well.
I'd buy an old 256Ram Pandora for 200Euro on top of my pre ordered one. Cant think of any other way to waste money thats more fun xD

Of course, I have to save a little to watch Iron Man making fun of Captain America and Hulk in Marvel’s The Avengers!... There are still some other movies... aH no biggY ; )

Im all in for the RAM upgrade as I use my Pandora for stuff its not ment to be used for... that extra RAM will help a lot.
