Doom 3 engine source code close to release!

That would be mind-blowing! Not sure if it's possible though ... I think I managed to run a demo of it on a PC with specs close to what the Pandora has on paper, but from various threads I learned that specs and specs is not always the same :p

What about RtCW, is there a source code available? A port being worked on? I would actually prefer that over a Doom3 port :)

If I read the wiki correctly there is some sort of port/emulation in the works but it didnt say much.

DOOM 3 would be awesome, would really show off the Pandoras capabilities if the little machine manages to run it acceptably! Not to mention DOOM 3 IS AWEOSME.

Let's hope the legal department clears it quickly.

I suppose the OpenGL -> OpenGL ES conversion will take quite some effort, but you can't tell until you see the source.

maybe we should start the bounty thread now, get a nice fat bank for pickle whoever gets the engine running optimally once it's officially released.

I hope Doom 3 plays better on ther pandora than Quake 3 does. We should not forget that even a good port doesn't mean automaticly good gameplay on such a different Plattform like a Handheld. Doom 3 was made for PC, same like Quake3...and I never managed to really "play" Q3 on the Pandora (in the meaning of fighting like I did on the PC ages ago :D ), sadly. ^^""

There is a XBox Version of Doom 3 but I doubt thatthere also is the full source available.

Somebody with some savvy please tell me that The Dark Mod or 'PanThief' will even be possible... my sense tells me not, but here's for spitballin'.

If the control scheme was tweaked a bit on Quake3 I think the game could be more playable. the Engine performance is real good IMO.

Doom 3 uses some pretty fancy lighting techniques (Carmack's reverse and so on) to provide realtime shadows and they are incredibly expensive.

I really can't see the Pandora handling any of those. Maybe if you turn all advanced features off you could get something to run? Not sure if you can turn all of it off though.

It's possible, I think it would be pushing the hardware to the limits (in a good way), it's a pretty big goal to get it running once they release the source.

Case closed :p

I wonder if it's still as big of a goal for the team, maybe big enough for ED to throw some investment money at it?

i think throwing investment money at it would be a tad counter productive in moving the business forwards at this particular moment in time and for a while yet. However if a well respected software developer where to announce they were willing to pick the project up (i know this defetes open source) i would happily throw the face value of the game to them to buy the port or i am sure there are enough of us in the community which would be willing to set up a kitty for the developer to collect if they made a decent attempt to port it to the pandora (i would happily pay even if the dev couldnt make it work as long as they had mad a decent attemt to do so, and that is all we can ask). That might be more realistic rather than using production and marketing money to increase the enjoyment further (which is a hard task in itself) for the few of us that are fortuinate enough to already posses a pandora

ed mentioned some money was set aside for software development in his business plan but I agree that it could be spent better. A big community bounty for doom3 gets my vote. Maybe everyone can agree on what a "playable" fps would be and set the bounty requirement to that?

Sounds like a great shout to me/and probably the most realistic shout so far doobieplex, good sugestion

And this is what's so awesome about an open source community like so. Everyone gets together to work out all the ports and to make things happen for the better of everyone! Woop woop DOOM 3

Hi :)

This is some great news ! When you see what the community has done with previous Doom and Quake engines, you can only marvel at what will be possible with this new ID Tech !

I have no doubt that the engine will work on the Pandora, but it will depend on what you throw at it... I guess a lot of eye candies will have to be removed from the code. Using the DSP, OpenGL ES 2.0 HW acceleration + some OC should do the trick though...

Bye, Magic Sam
