Nintendo Wii U

Maybe negotiations about that ultimately failed.
Possibly. We won't know about that, though.

orse for Nintendo, Philips is looking to halt the sales of those products while the court case proceeds, which could turn the Wii U's poor sales into an even more dire situation.   Ouch
That's never going to happen, though,. Nintendo will cough out money before they reach that point.

Hey guys,  I know I am very late to this discussion but I own a Wii U and right next to my Vita it just collects dust. I have it modded but I prefer the normal Wii because I can use gamecube controllers. I used to play my normal Wii all the time until I got tired of having to hooking it up so I went and got myself a Pandora. Really, I don't really like the Wii U...there really isn't much to play for it that I like and the games that I own for it aren't all that exciting. It is more of a party console...for perhaps younger parties maybe. I had good time with it and it can be a really fun device, don't get me wrong, I just wouldn't recommend it.

Shame you feel that way. I own a Vita and a Wii U (both "underperformers") and I'm loving both of them. Enjoyed myself lots with it and I don't even own a Mario game on the Wii U!

Both have a nice selection of indie titles via the store and those have been a great focus.

Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what was said about the original Wii as well, and look where you are now.The Wii U has all the ingredients to be a great console, the marketing department screwed up big time.

That's just business as usual. You get these lawsuits every year or so. Nintendo will just have to spit out some money to Philips if the claims actually have ground.
I'm wondering why Philips does this now, acorrding to the article Philips "warned" Nintendo in Late 2011. Why did it took them more than two years to actually take action ? Maybe negotiations about that ultimately failed.
Or maybe they were waiting to see what kind of sales Wii U made. These patent trolls are like parasites, the more successful the infringing company is the more money they can suck out of it.
But given the current Wii U situation, they probably decided to just "cash out" now.

Heh, this may help Wii U out actually.  Now that people think that N will stop selling Wii U soon, they will go out and grab them like hot cakes before they think there's no more and that Wii U will become an expensive retro machine down the road due to this crazy story (if it goes the pattern trolls way that is)

I've got a Wii U, as of last Christmas, and it is a truly excellent system for family / party gaming, just like the Wii. The look on my daughters face when she realised that you could control Princess Peach in a cat suit on Super Mario 3D World made think it was money well spent (plus the fact that you can use the gamepad to play Mario whilst watching 'boring football'  :) ).

I love its backward compatibility and especially love the controller. That said I do all my gaming on PC and handhelds (and more or less always have) to date the Wii U has only used when gaming with friends and family.

That may well change when I pick up Mario Kart 8 at the end of the month, which will hopefully sell rather well as Nintendo are running a rather desperate generous promotion where you can get a free game with every purchase of MK 8.

Here's a couple of things I'd do if I wanted to stop the rot at Nintendo.

Sort out the online side of things : at the moment it's simply not good enough, in fact it's shockingly poor, I never buy anything from the EShop as purchases are tied to an individual console and not a user account.

Make proper use of their back catalogue, I'm 100% certain that if they sold virtual console stuff for retro systems at prices competitive with games on Android / iOS then profits would increase.

Get Exophase to write a DS emulator for Wii U and sell DS titles for $5 ;)

I didn't even realise the online purchases were locked the device rather than account... that's a bit crap. What if the console packs in, games lost?

Thanks for the info on the Mariokart deal though, I'm going to take advantage of that, guess Zelda is the game to claim for me :)

One popular high road chain is also bundling in the wheel too, so I'll probably order from them

Nintendo has actually already announced plans to sell DS titles on Wii U in the near future. Presumably they'll be emulated. It'll be interesting to see what the results are like and how many games they release. There's a good chance they'll use the 3D hardware to render the DS graphics at a higher resolution than native.

But I don't think this is going to sell very many Wii Us.

Apparently this has been addressed with the new Nintendo Network. Now, when you log in with your Nintendo Network ID, you get access to the games you have purchased, should your old consoled explode or be stolen.

It's been partially addressed, the changes are of course better than nothing, but I'd like to be able to have a similar service to that offered by say Steam or Android whereby you can install the apps you own wherever you log in i.e. not have to uninstall stuff on the Wii before putting it on the Wii U / being able to install stuff I've bought for my 3DS on my Daughters 3DS. They are still miles behind with this sort of thing and stuff like online match making / in game communication etc.

Yeah I agree 100%. This message was meant to be longer but I figured there was no need because the Wii U speaks for itself. The name itself is a joke.

I want to enjoy them, but I am just too picky. I know people enjoy them, just sadly I am not one of them. But I do respect your opinion. They can be fun consoles.

I don't pay for games I don't physically get a copy of.  Because of recent activity here I decided to check out what is going on in Wii U land.  I saw NES Remix 2 and figured I would see what it was (I didn't even know there was a first one).  Everything else aside I really want to play Super Luigi Bros.  The rest also looks fun.  I don't know the price, but if this series is cheap enough I might consider buying them even though I can't physically own a copy.

I am a fan of a lot of Nintendo series, so if they bring the goods I am willing to throw my money at them.  I do wish they would change some things, though.  It would be nice if they had a bit of a turn around with the Wii U, because it can be a success.  Looking through the full list of titles I only see a few titles I want to play, and I already own some of them.  Nintendo knows you don't need raw power to make good games, and if they aren't getting good titles from 3rd parties they need to step up and do it themselves.  If this shit continues, or the Wii U fails, it looks like most of my gaming will continue be on handhelds and old consoles.

Does anyone have any suggestions for Wii U games?

Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze.

I don't actually own this yet myself, it's on my want list though, I think it looks good, and my kind of game for the Wii U

Mariokart, Smash Bros and Sonic Boom are upcoming titles I'll want buy

Smash Bros would be purchased even without me in this house.  I am considering Mario Kart, but I don't want to lose the ability to play online in 5 years...

Let me know if you like the Donkey Kong Country one.  It isn't a series I am into, but I could change that if it is an amazing game.

i dont understand the need for 3rd party support to be on nintendo consoles. every multi platform game on the xbone and ps4 are just as bad of a choice to play as on nintendo. i have a PC for most of the stuff i wonna play that isnt a nintendo game, while xbox and playstation have maybe 3 series together that i want to play that i cant elsewhere

I agree about third party games on Wii U.  Nintendo does need to get some good games out, though.  As for gaming on a computer, many titles require Windows, which limits new releases that are available to those of us who will not use Windows.

I disagree: I don't regret buying the WiiU, but two of the games I got most fun out of it (Lego City Undercover, Rayman Legends) were third party titles. While I still like some Nintendo titles, I'm feeling most of their various game series are getting somewhat old now: I liked Super Mario 3D World a lot, but Super Mario Bros U, was more or less - "same old same old", and even the new features on SMW3D did loose their charme rather quickly. Mario Kart 8 will surely be a great game, but the only real difference will be gravity and probably some minor adjustments. Zelda, more or less the same story, some alterations here and there, but thats it. etc. etc. That does not mean that I think that they should be rebooted or altered till you can't find anything resembling the orginal series, but as it is with books/movies/etc., some stories can't be retold/extended forever. And it looks also like some sort "confession of failure" from Nintendos game design department and management, if they can't come up with something new, but reherese the same things over and over again.

I got a Wii U, mainly for Nintendo games even though I also bought Rayman Legends and Trine 2 (digital download) and both are great!

I don't mind the lack of game that much at the moment cause I still have so many games to play on 3DS and PC ^^'

Nintendo games never get old for me, I'm so looking forward to Smash Bros and the new Zelda :D

Honestly, I've been feeling this way for awhile now, and that's the main reason I haven't bought a WiiU yet. It's just the same old stuff with a new coat of paint. I still enjoy a new Zelda or 3D Mario game, but everything else is just about dead to me.

Mario Kart on the DS was really a step in the right direction with the very robust single player game(challenges and such), then they rushed MK Wii to market, and the great improvements that where added on the DS are now gone. The 2D Mario games are really a joke at this point. They turn them out when they need a quick million seller when no new games are coming soon, but there really is no difference between the DS, 3DS, Wii, and WiiU games, which is beyond sad.

Rayman Origins is so much better than any 2D Mario game of the last 10-15 years that it's not even funny. Same goes for Sonic Transformed racing. Even though MK is a more polished game, transformed blows it away with overall fun and the crazy amount of things to do and complete. The games that made "N" great in the past, have now been equaled or improved by other companies and franchises of today, and the interest in "N" exclusives is shrinking more and more. Most of my close friends who all grew up with "N", haven't bothered with a new console since the GC and that wasn't that well received. I've held out longer than anyone else, but now I've just about given up :(

Really, at the end of the day, I don't think the WiiU is selling poorly due to the lack of games, but the lack of interest to the games that are there(same old stuff). Along with the price, it's just DOA for me and most others. My son really wants one, and I'm sure I'll get him one this Christmas, but I'm really holding out for a $200 or less bundle with a game that's worth getting. Paying more than that, for a system that will be lucky to see 5 more great games over it's life cycle, is just to much to pay.

Chris
