Rainy Day - Game Project

Oh, and by all means, this is definitly free to use. All art for this project is under Creative Commons (CC-BY-SA).

Alright, I got some "bad" news for you guys... (it's not actually bad but well... Just read on)

As you may have noticed the game is progressing rather slowly, that's because both I and Archibald don't have that much time during the week...

So what does this mean? Well, as we don't want to rush the game(demo) we will just be submitting a simple techdemo/sneak peek/experience thing. It will be very short... Just to give you a glimpse of what's coming. I have been wondering if something like this is allowed as an entry though... Whatever, it doesn't really matter actually, we just want to make a great game, we don't really care about the prices that much (anymore). So maybe we won't be submitting anything at all... But whatever happens, look forward to a short demo soon :)

Glad you rather finish the game properly than submit it prematurely :)

Sad you don't manage to finish it.

About the rules: As long as it can be considered "interactive entertainment" (aka game), meaning it got at least some gameplay in it, you may submit it.

We might be able to finish an "Alpha Preview" for the competition. Such a thing would indeed have a playable section of the game. I'm definitely aiming to get such a demo done (on the art side), wether or not this will be in time for the competition, will depend on the circumstances. Personally I'd focus on quality rather than rushing out this game.

:)
Archibald, I have upload both Penjin logos to the Official Wiki:

I want to give proper attribution where it is due, so a link beside the images, where should it link to? :)

Well, we haven't set up an Astolat Creations webpage yet, so if you want to give credit, you could add something like "Logo created by Astolat Creations" in small print somewhere on the wiki page for the time being. In this particular case, attribution is not something I'm that fiddly about. :)

Very small update (as we are getting closer to the compo deadline I won't be showing of that much new stuff anymore. Don't want to spoil everything :) )

It's a monster bacteria

Not really an update but just a post to let you guys know that we are not dead :)

I had an internship coming to an end last week and a presentation of it at school yesterday. Doing some more writing for a document about the internship at the moment (which will be done by tonight). After that school is over and I will be able to fully concentrate on this game :D

I think I will be making another video this Saturday, so you guys can see some more progress instead of a demo (now that the deadline has moved).

Time for an update :)

So there was no video on Saturday... There wasn't that much to show anyway (didn't want to do yet another video showing the test level). Archibald has been working on some level art pieces and he will be putting together the first level part this weekend (I made placeholders and he will make them look nice :D ). I'm now working on the collision between the monsters and the hero (killing monster & hero getting hurt). As I said before we won't be showing that much more stuff, the demo itself will be just a preview (not a game) and so we want it to have some new stuff in it you haven't seen already :) . Nevertheless, here some level art:

I could show you more but I don't want to "spoil" it all :)

Well, that's all for now, stay tuned!

You mean when "when will the game be finished?" We don't know... We both have lots of other things to do (especially Archibald) so I'm sure it will take some more months :) but ofcourse we will keep you updated with screens, videos and demos :)

Consider me officially excited to be playing that spritesheet, somehow, however you present it .. and please do make an "alpha release" for the purposes of the competition, I can't see at all how that would be 'disallowed' or whatever under the circumstances.

We fans can extend the deadlines mercifully for the authors we're watching, right!! :p

Don't worry, we still plan to submit something playable for the competition :) The rules say it just needs to be playable/interactive (so no video) which it is :D So look forward to a demo next week :)

Demo next week is perhaps a bit optimistic. While the graphics for the (tiny) playtest level area are coming together nicely, there's still loads of random little stuff to wrap up before we have the (playable) alpha demo ready. I think a safer estimate would be the END of next week, or perhaps even the beginning of the following week. Don't know whether that will work out for the competition, but as I said before, this project isn't about competitions, it's about making a good game.

Small update: The Rainy Day Alpha Preview is done :D it runs nicely on Windows (and probably Linux too) but still is a bit slow on Pandora (at 600mhz) trying to fix that right now :)

This means you will all be able to get a first glimpse of the game very soon. But don't expect much, it's only a preview, it's not a (one level) demo, it's just a small showcase of what to expect :)

And of course, whatever the result of the competition is, we will continue working on the the full game and finish it as soon as we can! :)

EDIT: Fixed the Pandora version slow down :D Only have to make an icon now and make it a .pnd :)

Hey guys, I tried out your demo! I wanna congratulate you on what you have so far! I even showed it to my friends too. Everything you have is very will put together. The whole presentation is simply amazing. Its almost unfair to only give us that little scene ...

What you have already is quite an accomplishment in presentation! I'm excited to see what you do on in the gameplay aspect.

Thank you very much :D

Well it's not about being unfair or not, as we showed you all there is right now... There are more level pieces as you have seen in a previous post but the level part you saw is the only finished one...

Development is going a bit slow but that's just because we we are both perfectionists :p we don't rush things. You could say the demo is perfect and we just need to make the level bigger and add more kinds of enemies but in my opinion there are still a lot of things missing. Here is a list of things that we plan to add:

- Music!!!

- New extended intro with images, text and ingame part inside house (instead of the one screen story)

- A different sound for every item you pick up. For the tokens the sound will reflect how much score its worth.

- Monsters will not just fall off the screen, they will fall to the ground, explode and maybe leave an item behind!

- Hero getting hurt will be tweaked, doesn't look that great in my opinion...

- Destructible crates and barrels in the levels. There can be items inside, or a monster... :p

- Going to add some rain splashes here and there to make it look as if the rain is really falling on the ground :)

- Some other stuff...

This is just a list of things that could have been included in this small part of the game :) Of course we also plan a a bigger level, more levels, more monsters and epic boss battles and so on :D

I'm sticking to my original verdict, as i got to playtest it a couple of days early: GIMME MOOOAAARRR!!!!!! ;)

It's just great :)
