The MMSP2 supports SRAM for the 940 so you can have seperate memory banks too, just as GPH decided not to use it. It would have made such a different to many emulators though, as they could have offloaded various graphics into this ram and let the second processor render them.
Is this a limitation to linux? Can it be exploited with the dawn of the HH era?

There not disses....just hardware limitations.......which are ashame really! It just means things aren't going to progress as far as they could due to a few minor hardware issues...which were overlooked when the machine was built.

Well minor things, like a $10 piece of hardware ad up when your producing LOTS of units. And I think evryone knows that gph doesnt have the big bucks like sony.

apparently the gp2x cost $34k to produce...

i bet sony spent that much on toilet paper :p

No, it's just not quite as fast as it could have been since the two processors must share access to the single memory.

We've got a great Mega Drive emulator. I just hope SNES can be almost as good or otherwise I might just regret selling my PSP if Yoyo keeps up with his progress!

You know the law that with bigger cache sizes the perfomance isn't increasing linearly.

And I haven't in a mind just a caches but a directly controlling cache's controler. There are possible some improvements to extract here. At least with tiling aproach what I'm using already and have plans to improve it further.

So every machine have to eventually share some common resources. The framebuffer for an example - there are methods to avoid this problem. It's all depending what is limiting the perfomance and how the tasks can be divided. Using tiled/deffering rendering the memory accesses can be minimized. My competition entry is proving that partiatlly (because it's using only single core yet it's giving a significant boost even for a single cpu).

The second core of GP2X has 4K for a data cache. It's not big amount yet with carefull programing it can be enough for many tasks. The both cores can have theirs caches controlled directly even with fill/flush capability. So it's entirelly possible (at least for some situations) to evercome memory bandwith problems and have high level of efficiency.

The PSP is better and faster hardware. Sorry but SNES on the GP2X is very unlikely to get close to the PSP in terms of speed, features and compatibility. If we are lucky SNES will be full speed with OK sound someday but NO transparency effects. You should have kept the PSP if SNES is what you want ;) I have said all along that the GP2X hardware is inadequate for perfect SNES. 200-266 MHz on a single CPU just can't quite eek it out.

Thought I'm not into snes emulating but I will dare to say that with the transparencies you are dead wrong. :D

I will alse make some statements about the PSP perfomance - cpu wise for general processing it isn't really that much powerfull than gp2x. At least when Arm capabilities are used to full extent what isn't always possible but for many things it is.

I think full SNES speed will be possible despite a few hardware limitations on the part of the GP2X. It may be more problematic with higher end machines like the Amiga, PSX, and N64 but the SNES should be doable. I have not given much thought to Amiga emulation. I know on the xbox x-port had trouble with memory, but what we have on the GP2X so far is pretty nice

It's just that the SNES is a little more complicated in it's makeup.
 
You guys are discussing ways of offloading graphics rendering to the second CPU, and the problems involved in that (bus bandwidth, shared resources, etc), right?

Has the possibility of trying to use the 2nd CPU for sound processing instead been discussed? That always seemed to be a big (if not the biggest) slowdown for SNES emulation.

From my (probably very simplistic and flawed) understanding of the SNES sound engine, it is largely based on sampling. So, could potentially the digital samples be loaded in memory exclusive to the 2nd CPU, and all CPU1 needs to send over the bus are instructions on what to do with that?

I thought full speed SNES was an eventual certainty giving the way this machine has been bigged up for emulation. Hope I haven't fallen for the hype! I don't regret selling my PSP yet as it's own games weren't good apart from GTA and a couple of others and Sony was always trying to block homebrew.

I have a question. I don't understand jargon like transparancies and the like. Of the following games which, in people's opinion, are likely to achieve full speed emulation eventually (barring the odd glitch):
Zelda, Mario World (and other Mario games), Chrono Trigger, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy's, Street Fighter games, Super Tennis and any other gems that I might have forgotten!)

Morwynd: The 940 can't access any Linux functions, so for it to do the sound hardware would mean sending all the data to the 940 for processing, and then pulling the samples back from 940 so the 920 can play them. That's going to be slower than having the 920 do them in the first place.

Squidge is there no way round this issue? Could a large scale open source rewite to the linux distro fix this? or is it a hardware issue?

Linux doesn't know anything about the 940, so the 940 can't use any Linux functions. The only way around this is to give the 940 an MMU, which isn't going to happen.
