For anyone that's interested, it looks like USB host is indeed usable from the EXT port, but with external circuitry to provide 5V power. Should open up some interesting options for wireless, storage, maybe keyboard/mouse if you're into that sort of thing.

It's looking being possible and I really hope so. It'd make many things much more easy and for the keyboard/mouse - it'd allows faster experimenting and debugging. And a notebook like keyboard isn't that big so I could go with just gp2x and use it for some text writting and editing too. (with 6pix font there are 53 columns of text - enough to be able to do some work in Vim)

/me dances in circles while he hums a mexican tune (daaaaa da dada da dada da dada, daaaa dada da dada da dada...)

Now we just need some sort of a stand... I can build one out of lego's like for the DS lego charging station...lol...

...but seriously this will be kinda nice. I wouldn't mind a little docking station that would have 5v power and I could use a keyboard to type stuff on it and whatnot. USB host would be very nice indeed...

Someone should make ext to usb cables (with the power connection of course) and sell them. I for one would buy one.

You should add that as a bounty in your sig ... you could replace the SNES one, since Squidge's is VERY playable :)

I've actually seen a micro usb keyboard...oddly enough for the Playstation 2...

I'm more interested in how he used JTAG. There has been close to zero information on how to use JTAG on the GP2X, yet he has used it successfully. How? Let us know, please!

Two words, Docking Station

Imagine it, USB to IDE apapter and USB hub on the inside. TV Out + Audio out on the back, 2x Playstation or SNES pad ports on the front maybe even infra red?

Put it all together and you've got 250GB of games and films sitting under your telly!

Gimme! Gimme!

I already have over twice that under my tv. I have a 200 gig drive in my xbox and it's networked to my 520 gig pc.

It's always nice to hear about a new feature that this little handheld can support, but the portable mods are always the best.

Maybe mounting it on the dashboard of your car... that would rock.

I had also noticed that JTAG was used to alter memory to 'load' a alternate kernel.

Which means a 'out-of-the-box' GP2X will be useless for this without a better kernel, modules and possibly user tools as well (joystick i/o remapping, shell terminals, et al).

But if you use a custom kernel you loose SD support (among other things)... :(

Which is why I want to see a GP2X 1.4 FW release; It will enable doing all these things for everyone, not just the EE types.

just because it seems to be my calling...

You do know that for this to work you'll have to compile your own kernel -- and since the only relased kernel sources are "a bit out of date" ---- you know the rest of this story....

Compiling a kernel is not that hard point as DijiTao has pointed out:
(99% of people would just use a premade one)

Compiling one with all the features that the GPH-Kernel has IS.

Or, why the GPL can be use for INNOVATION and IMPROVEMENT of software, instead of the usual upgrade $$$ treadmill/cash cow most other corperations want...

If Torpor pulled that off it's great news. Personally I'm looking for usb host so I can one day connect two usb gamepads and use the TV out cable to use the GP2X as a console when I don't need it travel sized :) The other immediate drooling throught is wifi.
