Big Faq Update From Gpain Interview

3. Different brightness on the two halves of the screen (noticable in the photo by the line in the middle of the screen). Photo also showing a possible fourth problem with contrasting areas leaving horizontal lines across the screen.

That picture isnt really a good demonstration of the vertical line, I took it to show the horizontal lines more than the vertical line.

Well I don't have any other. Could you take one showing only the vertical line?

Thanks for the photos, chris r.

Does anyone know if you have to install both the released firmwares or if the second one is enough? The second is only half the size of the first one which makes me think you need to install both.

I really wish someone could make both of these available. I can't find the first firmware anywhere?
The second one is here (thanks to Prodo):
GP2X firmware patch 20051117

Okay, regardless what GPH says about the LCD issues, the greyish contrast problems are software issues.

I just got a HH-Test which kicks out Linux and displays some graphic tests.

The LCD is absolutely stable there, no disturbance, no contrast problems.

It only displays some colors though, but using the GPH firmware, colored images look worse than with the HH-Test.

With the HH-Test, it looks like the BLU+ LCD :)

Would it be safe for me to try that firmware? I don't want to brick my unit just yet :p I also have the vertical white line (which I think is just exposed lighting element) as well as the horizontal contrast problem (which really isn't that bad at all).

It should be safe. Several board members have tried it already. Check here

I don't think the second firmware will fix any screen problems though. It fixes some issues with the volume and the ebook reader. You need the first firmware for the screen fix....which I don't have :(

This firmware only updates minor issues in the EBookReader and MusicPlayer.

As it doesn't update any system files, it's safe running it.

Did you run this on more than one unit?

Ok, this is a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt. That vertical white line on the left corner is believed to be the backlight showing up. With the firmware update, I read people saying the screen gets darker and in some cases didn't completely removed the white line; it just became dark grey. Anyway, to me, it sounds like you better wait until future firmware with more solid solution to come out; current firmware update seems like stop gap solutions.

I only have one for testing yet, but it suffers from the LCD greyish problem.

All guys I talked to also seem to have that problem.
Just talked to Squidge (you know, hardware guru):

His unit also does this, but he also thinks it is a backlight-too-bright issue which can easily be fixed, as he can control the backlight via software.

Well, that would make sense.

I (and also Squidge) think, that the greyish instead of black and the contrast problems are because of the backlight being too bright.

With the HH-Test, the line is gone and the picture looks better - because the backlight isn't that bright...

This answered quite a lot of questions I've been thinking about.
GPH seems like a new Tapwave; making their console more open would open many doors for developers, but still they aim for commersial product releases... :(
With that attitude, I'll never be buying one.

Commercial games aren't really a bad thing. They can help out GPH beyond the initial purchase of the console, which means they'll be more likely to come back with a new one. And the new one with have just as more bang for the buck than the last. I support both because unlike closing their doors to the community like Sony and Nintendo, they open them. Using the fact that they allow people to write games commercially as a reason not to get one is just foolish. There will be just as many homebrew goodies out for us to download as there was for the GP32.

From my perspective it makes the GP2X more appealing than the 32, I love homebrew and emulators which is what lead me here but i still love the commercial games too, I am waiting a while probably after chrsitmas to get my GP2X and i'm hoping there will be a few commercial games out for me to grab then too.

I may be speaking out of term here but the attitude of "I'm not buying this because i have to pay for software" to me personally is very strange, From my point of view it comes across as saying you would never donate to the Homebrewers either, To me this is totally weird because these guys do great stuff and if you use there goodies you should at least donate to them, I guess that is just my opinion though so no matter.

problems or not, i'm still getting mine and not cancelling my pre-order .. why? because i'm a developer, and the sooner i get this console, the sooner i can get my games out there on the fledgling market ..
